forgive me but i beg to differ. by using a simple method of tri-angulation it can be said that the direct center of the world (nay, the universe!) would be between the three following points: el farolitos 24th/mission, cancun 6th/market and castellitos church/market. the x marks the spot almost exactly at dolores park! hurrah!

weed eater 06-23-05 05:10 PM

just call it "babylon"

You are very close, but if you look closely, el farolitos should actually be replaced by la corneta. Just FYI ;)

c'mon! mere quibbles...

Mouton 06-23-05 05:14 PM

Man, La Corneta is one of my favorites.

drac_vamp 06-23-05 05:17 PM

all of this burrito talk might prompt a mighty big "burrito ride" in which each participant must complete (at the very least) 80% of his/her burrito at a number of spots to be determined by favoritism. each rider must choose a favorite and everyone has to go to each and every place, gripes and complaints aside. 10 riders, 10 spots. 20 riders, god forbid!, 20 spots. lots of rice, lots of beans, lots of cheese, lots of chips/salsa (except at the places that have now started charging for it --- damn you farolitos!)

i feel ill just thinking about it.

measuring burritos to determine 20% would require a big a$$ caliper.

TNCLR 06-23-05 05:55 PM

GENIUS!! The Big Burrito Alleycat.

nottightpants 06-23-05 06:22 PM

right....so......do you want to race, or talk about the semantic value of "frisco?"
call out--

weed eater 06-23-05 06:24 PM

Talk about semantics, of course. I don't like racing.

deadly downtube 06-23-05 06:25 PM

only brakeless?? *gasp*
what about all the brake users who take off their brakes just for this one race, can you say roadkill??? ur sending good people to die sir :(

46x17 06-23-05 06:29 PM

don't worry - if you are fixed you have a drive train brake!

Now stop calling it brakeless!

Race? Sure! I'm in!

sucka free 06-23-05 10:16 PM

San Fiasco, Sucka Free, Ess Eff, The City....whatever.

This alleycat intrigues me.

so is this a semantic thing?

what are these?

use your imagination and add a chain, cog, and wheel to this image....do you call that object in this image the same as those in the image above?
http://www.branfordbike.com/images/crank/sug75.jpg

I ride brakeless; suits me just fine.

Sorry to interrupt the thread. Wish I could race all of you.

r-dub 06-23-05 11:39 PM

"the west bay"

I don't call them the same and they are not the same: One is a drivetrain that can act as a drivetrain brake the other two are part of the handbrake setup. Both of them can be brakes. Just because it is not a handbrake does not mean it is not a brake. Do you call a coaster brake a handbrake?

Do run a freewheel with no handbrakes? - then you are riding brakeless - unless of course you use your shoe to rub against the tire then you have a shoe brake.

Considering the number of times I've nearly been clipped in Sausalito on my road bike, there's no way I (for one) am doing that hill brakeless. Too dangerous, methinks...

Farolitos?!?! also Castellitos...I'm not as shocked about Castellitos, but neither can hold a candle to El Metate, run by my friend Francisco, at 22nd/Bryant. Food is fresher and better, and if you want something more exotic, like octopus or nopales, you can usually convince Francisco to get it for you.

gnatthew 06-24-05 10:53 AM

I'm thinking it should be called the "ROAD WARRIORS" race.
Actually, screw the race, whoever dresses up most like this guy wins:

I'm dusting off my leather chaps as we speak.

unaesthetic 06-24-05 05:13 PM

if mos def can call brklyn 'the planet', i can call sf 'the city'.

dolface 06-24-05 05:16 PM

i think if you're mos def you can call anything anything you want

Mouton 06-24-05 05:32 PM

Guru also calls it The Planet on Hard to Earn.

ostro 06-24-05 06:46 PM

this site claims these names for SF...

San Francisco, CA The Golden Gate City
San Francisco, CA Shaky Town
San Francisco, CA Baghdad by the Bay (WTF?!!??!!?)
San Francisco, CA The City

dolface 06-24-05 07:07 PM

'Baghdad by the Bay' was coined by herb caen, and is considered legit by old family/money san francisco peeps, for whatever that's worth.
