lame lame lame
I'm throwing a race called- I love marin yuppies that make over 100k a year, drop a quarter of it on a fancy usps signature edition road bike, support critical mass, and drive my sweet suv to the city every morning for work appreciation ride- note that I'm calling this a ride, not a race. god forbid anybody race in a dangerous manner that would monkey wrench a bunch of w@nkers' (i'll probably get made fun of for using the word "w@nker") sat. coffee ride. Oh wait- and you can use your brakes. It'll be so much fun! won't it guys!

That falls into the same category as people referring to California as "Cali". So yes, tourist jargon.

Hey i'm from "CALI" and I still call it "Cali" and to me "The city" is Manhattan...just a slight difference in geological context.

But i'll be in "the city"(SF) on the 22nd of july so i'd definately try to go to the grease monkey mayhem... I just have to find a way to get out of the wedding i'm suppose to go to... and a bike.

Frisco, san fran, whatever.

I've spent over twenty years of my life in sf, and frankly I don't care what people call it.

Most of the people that get all bent out of shape about it are transplants that are trying too hard.

"The City" is pretentious. I like SF, its a nice town, but its not the center of the world, don't kid yourselves.

Anyway, sounds like fun. I like timing it to coincide with the roadies. Shake things up a bit.

peace,
sam

"the city", as a title for san francisco proper, on the other hand, dates back quite far. my great-grandmother moved to san francisco in or around 1906 (yikes), and the rest of the family has stayed firmly planted ever since. "the city" was her term, even back then. true, it rings of pretention, but it's not supposed to be putting down other places or anything, like "theeee (one and only) city", but just a way of differentiating from the suburbs that started popping up outside "the city" around the early 20s and 30s. (daly city, south city, the surrounding south bay, etc.)

Thirded or fourthed.

People who live in the Bay Area call San Francisco "the city." People who live elsewhere in the country call Manhattan (or St Louis, for all I know, as well) "the city." People who live in London call the old town center, which is now the Financial District, "the City" (uppercase usually).

I probably am one of those "transplants trying too hard," but "Frisco" just sounds dumb. Sorry Doc.

I like this thread though!
