Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? DC: Beer Festival Ride

This is neither an event nor an alleycat, but I thought I'd thow it out there, since several of us forumites are doing it...

We're going to be riding the W&OD trail out to about mile 24.5 on Saturday to hit the Old Dominion Beer Festival. Fixed or gears welcome, though most of us are fixed. Come bike some, get your drink on, and then attempt to bike back.

Seems we'll meet in Dupont Circle, rolling out at noon.

PM me if you're coming, so's that we know who to wait for.

This looks like good fun. I'll make it if I have anything left after my morning group ride! I'll be on a SS blue Trek roadie conversion. Will look for you there (not downtown).

Deal. I believe I'll be on my steamroller w/the knitted top tube cover.

BTW- the punchline on this one is that there are always legions of cops sitting outside the festival watching people stumble to their cars so that they can arrest 'em the minute the drivers turn a key. But us, we're infalliable! Ha ha!

ah beer festivals,
what fond memories

alas there will be not enough time in the day for me to attend this rally and participate in certain prearranged activities.

i wish you well in your debaucherous expeditions
ride safe

Fifty breweries, $2 for 6 oz. Examine your priorities carefully, young man.

Priorities, indeed. We are offering a day with 50+ miles of riding and 40+ ounces of drinking. Now, if that's not perfect for your "training" calendar, I don't know what is.

oh, and jrowe, that's $1 for 6 oz. sweet.

oh, and jrowe, are you going to change your handle when you move to boston?

I stand corrected. I guess $2 per 6 oz. wouldn't be anything special.

I will still be jrowedc. This is home.

Yes, you're right. Using my beer-based calculation skills, I can tell you affirmatively that $2 for 6oz would mean $4 for a beer, basically. Or $6 for a pint. Neither would be good.

The reality is a $2 beer or $3 pint, which is a damn good deal, especially for good beer.

He's racing on Sunday... You should all come out to Reston for the GP. I'll be marshaling. heh

I can meet you folks in Vienna at the caboose or something. If you're leaving Dupont at noon, that should put you there around 1 depending on your pace. I'll be on a blue Cannondale track... Perhaps one of you can PM me a cell number in case something comes up.

ok, so as it stands, we're rolling out of Dupont at noon with about 3-5 people,
picking one more up somewhere near rosslyn,
meeting one more in vienna around 1,
and meeting several more at the festival.

this should be fun.
and slightly dangerous on the way home.

if you're looking for us there, i'll have a bright pink campy hat on.

This sounds like too much fun. I wish I could come, but I'm away from DC for the summer and already missing it. How about a report so we all know what fun we missed?

Good times were had, people were ogled, some mocked. Pogs were traded for beer and jerky was consumed. It was a pleasure to meet you folks and I hope we can hook up again in the near future, even if Jeff is running off to Baw-stun.

I ended up going out for a spin w/ flythebike when I got home; I hope you folks made it safe and sound.

Bryan

yup, we made it home.
indeed.
though there was one crash you missed that involved, well, yeah. such was bound to happen, and nobody was hurt, though property damage was done...

That was a great time. You're a hard man, Bryan, if you went out for another ride. I'm going to figure out a way to transport a bike back and forth between here and Boston, as I expect to make the trip fairly regularly. We'll have to go for another ride.

My advice to future festival-goers: skip the second bag of jerky.

I can say with some level of authority that said crash had nothing to do with alcohol, so no need for concern. It was entirely due to a combination of incompetence and ... well, I'll leave it at that. As I said, no need for concern.

Glad to see a figure of some authority appear on this board.
Oh, and by the way, our parking scheme ended up working in the end, but the process of fitting five bikes in three bikes' space wedged between a stairway and noisy generator was, well, interesting, but our heros the new guy and jrowe came through for us in the end...
