Hi !

I'm currently building an Cinelli Tutto and i'm looking for a wheelset. My budget is around 500-600$ and i want wheels with a minimum of 17mm inner width and less than 2000g. Can someone help me find what and where i can buy online ?

If deeper rims are your thing and black is your colour, what more could you ask for? That’s a fantastic price for a handbuilt wheelset. What more are you looking for specifically, that could help anyone to guide you? I have a set of H+Son tb14’s laced to dura ace 7600’s that was hand built and it cost me several hundred dollars more, despite my hubs being significantly cheaper than a set of Phils. So unless this wheelset isn’t actually your style, I’m not sure why you haven’t purchased it yet, to be honest.

tracksupermarket has a number of wheelsets, ans they almost all fall within your range. This one for example is exactly the same as mine and I’m jealous I could have got it cheaper:

if you want a deeper section wheel but a polished look, you could go for this:

they also do full custom wheels as well. But youd be hard pressed to find another set of wheels with Phil hubs at the price that retrogression is offering. I’m not saying Phil is the end all, be all of hubs, but they are more expensive than nearly all other track hubs, so that price is extremely good.

Those are killer wheels. Having owned an almost identical wheelset(stolen, :( ), the ONLY downside to Phil hubs is their weight. I have a theory that the extremely thick/strong axles greatly contribute to the bearing longevity. Go for it if its in your budget, you wont be disappointed.

I would buy those if I didn't already have a set with Suzue Promax hubs.

I've ridden on H+Sons, and they performed very well.
They were very round (This may be placebo, but they just rode in a very VERY smooth way), and had great "resonance". That's a weird term, but it's just the best word I can use to describe the way they felt when going over bumps and lifting the tire up. They did not vibrate as much as previous wheels, and they landed with a solid, stiff, symmetric thud when going off of curbs and such. I had the TB14 (The archetype will for sure be stiffer), but they were still stiffer than other box sections that I had ridden. I felt that stiffness when cranking down hard and skidding. All H+Sons are also 23mm wide, so that may or may not help you with cornering. I did avoid a head on collision with them, and had I slipped up even a small amount on two extremely quick snappy turns, I would have gotten creamed in an extremely serious way. IDK if that had anything to do with how well they cornered, but they didn't slip out or flop over under me under like the sharpest turn you've ever made in your entire life lol.
Their rims are also very aesthetically pleasing, which just feels good to ride around and look at which makes the psychological aspect of the riding experience a little better.

Your other options are like mavic ellipse (which i've heard very good things about), and perhaps some velocities. Magic ellipses don't seem like the best street wheels though.
From what I've heard about Phils (I have a pair that I haven't put on a bike yet), and from what I've experienced with H+Son, you're getting looks, performance, and durability all in one combo there.
I can usually get 1 or 2 out of those 3.
Personally, if this was going to go on a commuter bike, with that budget it would probably be an insta-buy for me. I'm actually drooling over it right now lol.
If you're riding it just a couple times a week, you could look into lighter/weaker wheels.

Thanks everyone . There is a little problem, my fault, but the price on Retrogression is in USD (when i first look and post this) and my budget is in CAD ! So the wheelset with Phils hub is a little bit to much for my budget. This bike won't be my "main" bike, i mostly use my road bike.

So my other option is the same hub but with less expensive hubs. Some DiaCompe Gran Compe hubs. Good ? Crap ? Bettween ?

Most hubs that are midrange will be some variation of formula hubs.
I would just get formula hubs. One brand that sells them is origin8. Just look for the track ones.
They are rock solid and will be great for most applications. Just don't radial lace them.

Velomine has great deals on formula hubs laced to some H+Sons.
You're looking at literally half the price of that above wheelset.
Someone else might be able to chime in with a better midrange option, but formulas have been my goto for a while and i've never had problems with them.
Those grand compes look cool. Never rode them. I hope they have sealed bearings if you're planning on using them daily.

The gran compe (non pro) hubs are perfectly good hubs. Great choice, especially if this isn’t your everyday rider.
