A cheap Pashley Guv'nor ?

Trolling Ebay and stumbled on this one, a rugged, if heavy, commuter, probably take easily to fenders and rack:

Raleigh 2018 Preston

The model may not be selling that well...Jen's Bikes is currently selling multiple sizes for $250.00 with free shipping. (Original MSRP $699.99)

So, did ya buy the Raleigh? :)

That bike is currently still for $250 with free shipping on Amazon direct from Raleigh, too.

Was an internet find...

I recently bought a Raleigh Back Alley, and got a nice set of wheels for my 70s Record Ace .

I thought for $250/free ship, somebody could get the Preston, for a pretty solid SS commuter.

The red Back Alleys are $189.00 with free shipping on Amazon right now. Very tempting to get one just for one of my kids to hop on. Of course, I'd have to test it for function a few times a month for the safety of others. :D

That's a great price, IMO. Paid $220 shipped for mine from CityGrounds.

Sturdy bike. More "brick/primer red" than "fire engine/lipstick red".
About 25lbs, so more "urban" tank than "track" speedster.

Lots of fun for the price.
Once they're sold out , the resale should be pretty good.

I'd buy again.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...289882139c.jpghttps://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...dffa74e904.jpg

That looks like a fun ride. :thumb:

How's the sizing work for you? I see it's a Large?

Also, that saddle. It's hard to tell what it's like from photos. Is it a chunk of rubber like it looks to be or is it a vinyl covered saddle with internal padding?

I ask because I like commuter type padded saddles and am curious if that saddle falls into that category.

>>>Good fit, medium would have worked with more seatpost showing.

>>> Probably nylon shell with a micro fiber cover...shape is a bit of a Selle Italia Turbo knock-off.
>>>Good for a 30 min ride so far, but sit bones not ready for ride season yet. Not very padded.

I almost bought that Back Alley, but my 54 year old knees are acting up and I realize how much I depend on shifting down a gear when the knee pain intrudes on a ride.

Makes me want to get a Back Alley anyway and stick an IGH rear hub on it. But there goes the low cost of that bike. Arrrrgh.

2017 SE Tripel (3 speed)...corrected the model year.

FiftySix -

While it seems to be less commonly for sale(depending on frame size, some shops may have a few leftovers), and SE doesn't appear to still produce it,
I bought my nephew this bike for his HS graduation:

2017 SE Tripel:
3spd Shimano Nexus hub with grip shifter.
Geometry/Frame/Fork/Wheel/Tire (32mm)/Brake specs all very similar to the Raleigh....Tripel weight about 28lbs vs Back Alley at 25lbs.

Found a few retailers with offers online.

Even a range of frame sizes...most about $350 w/free ship. I bought his for $330 w/free ship about a year ago.

One source:

One Amazon Tripel review:

5 stars, July2018
"Good deal.
Well designed and comfortable. The Nexus 3 speed hub is by far, the best aspect. I'd recommend this bike. Now, if I can just get it away from my son..."
PS - sounds like you need a bike for yourself. :innocent:

That looks like an excellent solution. :) :giver:
