Cross (top bar) Brake Lever for Aero Road Bars?
 

If such a thing exists, I have not been able to find it on the net.

I am converting one of my track race bikes so that I can ride it on the road with a front brake. It's a BMC trackmachine 02, upgraded with Shimano crankset/power meter, Roval Rapido 40mm wheels, and Easton EC90 carbon aero bars. I am putting a new fork on the bike that is drilled for brakes --- adding a Dura-Ace front brake and Paul cross lever. Ideally, I'd like some sort of custom cross lever to mount on the aero bar tops. There is about 8mm of space in between the stem and the point where the bars flatten out, which is not a lot of clearance for a bracket! Not sure something exists. Has anyone seen or heard of anything? This would basically be a more extreme version of an oval bracket/clamp. If not, I already have some standard Easton bars on order that will work, but I have grown accustomed to the aero bars and would prefer a solution for them.

Just use the non-aero bars.

I'm sure a cross-top lever doesn't exist for your bars. A custom one would be cost-prohibitive, I'm sure. Have you considered using a bar-end brake lever on the drops? Not my cup of tea, but it is a solution.

That's what my bike tech suggested, but not my cup of tea either. It's no big deal changing the bars. I already have some on order. I love those aero bars though!

what's a bike tech? like a personal mechanic? what level are you racing at?

But seriously...if you really want that crabon aerobar on your Sw8 Phiksie - the simple solution is hooded brake levers...

I have a similar situation. ITM Mantis aluminum road drop bars with aero tops, 31.8mm clamp. Wish to add cross-style interrupter brakes. I bought one set of 31.8mm interrupter levers and and squeezed and hammered and vised their clamps into oval shapes. Came kinda close to matching the bar profile. But damn they were beat up and ugly by the time I finished. I might buy another set and do a cleaner job.


I like prototyping stuff and working metal. But maybe someone has a better idea?


My campy brifters have both brake and shifter cables routed in the hollow under the Mantis aero section. Do the brifters care what shape of bars? Can I mount them to any old round section handlebars and simply route the cables along the forward edge of the bars? And employ regular round clamp interrupter levers? That is what I should do, right? Thanks!
