I mentioned having seen this accomplished in another thread, so I had to try it for myself. I red loctited a cog onto a campy record freewheel hub, let it dry for a couple days, rode it around like a madman, tried to remove it via every means that my imagination presented, failed, sprayed some Turtle Wax Liquid Fire De-icer on it, then succeeded removing it with a simple 12" chainwhip. Threads on both cog and hub are a-okay.

The deicer is probably methanol, which is a pretty good solvent! I bet it just dissolved its way right in, with the help of whatever surfactants are in there like propylene glycol allowing it to have limited surface tension.

Heat works as well, but that makes some people nervous, understandably.

I tried a de-icer — it didn't work at all. could it be because it's a plain brand from the grocery store? I've also tried everything else: heat, turpentine, brute force. now I'm stuck with a crappy cog with a coupla damaged teeth (pipe wrench). (~~)
