oh fixie gods, recommend some shoes

hi all

i am a big rider in the city (20+ miles a day) but i also walk a lot and want to look good in new york. i don't want clipless, and i want something that can be my "all" shoe this summer when i tour from san francisco to vancouver - for riding during the day and going out at night. what do y'all recommend?

something hip, cool (but not overly mall-skater-boy-ish) but that also has nice hard soles for many moons of riding? bonus points if its under $50

peace
bikey

well if you're not riding clipless....perhaps you should check with COOLHIPRUNNINGSHOES.COM.

Seriously, just get something that you find comfy. Simple, Vans, Airwalks, Converse...all make nice shoes...tonnes of different models to suit your style.

Sounds like a fun ride!!

I can't recommend any hard soled shoes, but my current shoe of choice is the Vans Grecos.

There's a ton of shoes in this thread, too: https://www.bikeforums.net/singlespeed-fixed-gear/83309-shoes-clips.html

skate shoes with stiff soles, much like a pair of the hsu 2s by osiris. and in case you're wondering, jerry hsu has about the illest style this side of tom penny. don't forget louie barletta, also.

1. You can definitely go wrong with Cons. 2. You're riding from San Francisco to Vancouver without going clipless? Wow. I would get some Vans (or other thick stiff-soled shoe), and some extremely nice custo molded orthotic inserts, because your feet are going to weep. Adidas' soles are usually pretty stiff, but I didnt just suggest that. (Vegan/Sweat-free is good.)

I usually wear Vans but I'll tell you I bought a pair of IPATH hemp shoes and they're great! They have a good arch support (if you need that type of thing) they breathe, the tread is pretty flat and they've put up with some crazy abuse! I can't remember the name of the style I have, but they're very plain looking. the Amish would be proud-oh wait,no they wouldn't!

I think I've run the whole gamut of skate sneakers always to run full circle back to my Adidas Sambas. Doesn't look bad with a casual suit either.

I ordered blackspots before they came out, and have had 'em since about mid-September. I love 'em-- far stiffer, more comfortable, and more substantial than Converse, and they've held up far better than my trash-after-6-mos converse ever had. Definetely worth the $ and the wait.

Plus, when you buy a pair, you get a share-- and a vote in the company. pretty cool.

The new Jack Purcell CP's are really nice. My girlfriend got a pair of them in NY a few months ago and I have been coveting them ever since. They've got a nice cushy insole, stiff soles, a little more padding around the ankle. Suh-wheet. I really like my Purcells for riding, so I'm looking forward to ones that are comfortable to walk around in as well.

Speaking of shoes - does anyone know where to find a pair of those Adidas EM Comps?

I ride in Nike FC skate shoes. You can usually get them pretty cheap on sale at skate shops since they don't appear to be very popular. They are essentially an indoor soccer style shoe with cushioning in the heel and toe area for skating. Nice stiff sole.

My current fav biking shoe is a pair of black wing tip dress shoes (aka the Old Man Shoes) that I picked up on some sale rack. Here's why:
1. Tacky old man fashion never seems go out of style.
2. They look good with both manpris and seersucker suits. Maybe a little fetish-y with spandex.
3. Real leather uppers wear well.
4. Smooth and stiff low-profile rubber sole ensures easy in-n-out of toeclips.

second the bostonians; the leather sole is plenty stiff for biking, plenty flexy for walking, and hold fast to the pedals.

sneaks are for kids...

My Docs have been with me for almost 8 years, almost every day (sometimes I wear my chucks) and I love tjhe way the squishy sole squeezes between the strap and pedals and holds me in until I want out. Not for weight weenies though. In fact, I think I need to start looking for another pair.

Thinking about getting some. Does the sizing match up to that of Chucks? I'm always wary of mail ordering shoes, since my feet are wide.

Same here. I have wide feet as well, and have to get chucks a bit oversized so they'll fit. Kinda sucks cause then I have an inch of enpty shoe in front! But, I have relatively small feet, so that's probably a good thing.

Carnac Carlit...beautiful italian classic touring shoe. I think it's been disco'd, but some shops still have them.

I second the call for the Sambas. Trying to use the time before these wear out to find something a little more ethically nicer but they're a tough shoe to beat IMHO.

Chucks are far too flexy for me. I tend to wear either vans (sk8-hi or camacho) or an old pair of jungle boots.
