A quick way to tighten clearance
 

Quick but certainly not recommended.....

I hit a car on Friday and am just out of hospital after having my lung re-inflated. I have attached some pics of my mangled fixie to help illustrate the incident.

Basically, I was belting down Bath St. in the centre of Glasgow when a female driver lurched from a sidestreet, straight in front of my bike leaving me with nowhere to go but straight into her onto the ground. The most frustrating thing was that I saw the back of her head as she looked the wrong way down a one-way street just as I hit her......

I sustained a broken collar bone, two broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Thankfully there were witnesses and the woman has been charged with 'driving without due care and attention' and her insurance will be buying me a new frame and then some. At the moment I'm thinking of either Circle A or Bob Jackson and the thought of a new custom frame has kept my mind off the pain! Any suggestions, fire away.

How d'you find a fixed-gear in Glasgow? There's an awful lot of very steep hills - do you have to route around them, or is it a matter of having a low enough gear and plenty of patience, or just beasting it up them?

Yeowch! Glad to hear your alive. A similar thing happened to me three weeks ago - I was travelling down a street at a fairly good clip and out of nowhere flys this guy in a benz SUV perpendicular to me. I was able to turn a little bit so I hit him at an bit of an angle, near the rear quarter panel. I was thrown into the side of him, then sailing through the air for about 10 feet before landing and doing what I've been told was a "spectacular double summersault" when I hit the pavement. My bike and me (well, most of me) was okay.

You bike hurts me to look at! I'm glad they busted her. Enjoy the new frame!

EDIT: Get the Jackson!

Looks like an almost exact replica of my bike, remodelled by the famous London Black Cab framebuilders. Super tight geometry as long as you only need to turn right.

Hope you heal quickly and looking forward to the new bike eases the pain. I got a Bob Jackson and it is lovely.

I was asked the same thing by a London courier a while ago! I find it fine and I run a relatively high gear (48x16). There are a few hills that I have to beast up but the more I do them the less beasting is required!

I also forgot to mention, I was supposed to take part in my first TT, being arranged by the Glasgow couriers on the small island of Millport, on Saturday the 2nd. How crap is that timing! Oh well....

I am swaying towards Bob Jackson as they're a bit closer to home, but we'll see.

I'd lean towards a Bob Jackson... though I do like Circle A's as well. But there's something classy about a Jackson....

Thanks Absntr. I have been really amazed at the support I have had from the police with this. One of the paramedics that helped me was a cyclist so he was very sympathetic also. Sometimes I lose hope for the attitudes of drivers in Glasgow but its nice to know there are people in our corner sometimes.

Momentum - Have you posted pics of your Jackson? Any chance of some pics?

This is the second punctured lung this year. Is there a new 'Vlad the impaler' handlebar I do not know of?

i thought i had a collapsed lung this week. insane pain when i breathed. it's gone now though so that's good news.
