Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? SS build.

Looking to convert a geared bike to a SS and need advice. What I want to build is a very light (sub 14#) with a 48-16 gear, 50mm carbon wheels, aero carbon bars, with rim brakes. Frame material doesn't matter as long as it's light. Now, which will be better to tension the chain, if needed, an eccentric BB or a tensionor that mounts on the drop out. If so, list some brands of gear for me to look at. I have the money and don't mind spending it and good quality parts is my preference. Been thinking about this for a couple of years and have decided to go ahead with it. What would you build spending someone else's money?

Thanks.

If money is not an obstacle GET A PROPER SS/FG BIKE!!!!!!! Plenty of great frame builders who can build you something nice and light and depending on the parts you use it can get really light. My ideal set up would be probably the Don Walker Stagger Lee with Cane Creek eeBrakes with Jagwire Elite Link housing hooked up to SRAM S900 levers. For Drivetrain it would be Sugino Super75 Direct Drive Cranks mated to White Industries freewheel using an Izumi Super Toughness Chain (though I would swap freewheel to EAI Gold Medal Cog). We would differ on wheels and handlebar simply because I am a big rider and not really interested in carbon wheels or bars however the wheels would be handbuilt.

If I wanted to save a little weight I might go with something like the ZIPP Vuka Alumina bars with the SRAM TT levers would certainly hit a touch lighter and if I didn't need the drops which I really don't that often I can do well. Again you could probably get a carbon bar that is lighter.

I bet you could get that sub-14 easily and you could talk with "The Don" and probably go a little more custom. You could also consider something like the No.22 Little Wing but drilled for brakes. As it looks like you have some Ti bikes already you know wasssup. Steel is real but Ti is fly, Caw-Caw!

My Langster currently sits around 16.5 pounds and with a heavier seatpost 32h wheels, heavier bottle cage and tool mounted as well as a Brooks Cambium saddle on a stock langster frame (upgraded fork) that ain't so bad. I could get that down quite easily with a nicer frame and certainly a light seat of wheels could do wonders but the bike is good for now and I am not a weight weenie.
