would anybody have criticisms about a high flange phil double fix with a mavic open pro rim?

would it actually be better than an iro?....3x better to be exact

what criticisms could you make about a setup like that?? solid hubs, solid rims. better than an iro setup? hell yes.

my only complaint would be iff youre going to get a sexy phil wood.. dont blow it with an unsexy flip/flip.. get the single sided and a good chainwhip unless youre doing some serious touring

Im looking for rims too. I also just got a set of phils too and im trying decide between open pro's or cpx 33's. Which is tougher?

Aren't the Open Pros higher on the Mavic rim line?

There's always Velocity. I've heard the Dyad line is tough - it's a touring rim.

i dont want aero rims...like the open pros...and y'all seem to hate the aeroheads

I've ridden IRO hubs and now Phils, and the latter are really worth the money. So smooth.

Also, Phils with Open Pros is a sick setup, and a classy look.

i think im gonna go that way....and yeah....im thinkin f/f because i may be doing some super distance stuff in the future...and im thinkin ill want to have a free wheel on one side

also...i figure it is a back up thread in case i toast one side...

I have phils with 33s. lovely. they just look so muvh nicer than open pros. the new shiny sticker on the open pro looks awful imo

open pros are a box section rim, cpx33s are high profile. from what i understand, deep "v" section rims are inherently stronger than box sections. they're also going to be more aero and considerably to marginally heavier.

I always thought the CXP 33 was a heavier duty rim. I think it's 465 grams and a 23.5mm V profile. Open Pro is lighter duty 420 grams and a 18.5mm tall semi-box shape.

I built up a Phil 32H fixed/ fixed hub to a open pro rim this year. I have about 1000 miles on it. I do mostly open road riding, not much in the city. It is a great combo, totally rock solid and reliable. It is also very comfortable. I weigh about 190lbs. and I used 14/15 buuted spokes.

My previous wheel was a Promax disco on a Alex 19?? rim. That was also a good setup but nothing like the Phil. I think the biggest difference is the bearings and the lockring threads. I also do not get any slipping in the drop outs with the Phil. The spacer is stainless steel and really grips the drop out.

I thought it was all hype about the Phil hubs but it is not. They really are nice!!

i'm going on my 6th year with open pro/phil 3x set up. messengered on them for four years and haven't had to touch them. my front rim finally gave out about a month ago and thought about replacing it with velocity but the way these have stood up i decided to stick with the open pro.

now that is a good review ...

i ride phils fixed/fixed laced to cxp33s, and i love them. they're my everyday wheels, and i ride them all over the place, mostly on san francisco's cr4ppy streets, and have had no problems whatsoever. they feel smooth and solid and i don't worry about them getting trashed by every little bump.

i went with fixed/fixed because i wanted the option of having a bailout gear for longer rides.

i can't think of one...maybe f/f is heavier than singlesided?

i also have phils/open pros. i love them. light, strong, hold up to potholes and crappy weather. really just great wheels. i've had them for 4 years.

edit: ...and haven't had to true them once.

and aero rims will be slightly 'stiffer', because of the extra rim material, which may or may not make the ride harsher.

You can always compensate for the aero rims' stiffness by using a butted spoke though (even one with a 17 guage center)

In fact, Jobst Brandt would say this is a more durable combo than a lighter rim with thicker spokes.

phil'd open pros, 32h, 3 cross, fixed/fixed. classic.

All I can say is go with brass nipples. Aluminum are a pain in the butt.
