Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Good Idea/Bad Idea?

A little misguided I imagine I am, looking for a safe route to work in the AM
Roads are ****ing crazy to drive a car I feel lazy.
To bike to work, it's the way to go. Even if a little slow.
Ponder now this I am, follow the CSX trainline I can.
Build up the crosser and scout the line
hopefully there is a nice hardpack a safe distance off the line.

Am I up for a Darwin if I look into this? Right now the best way to ride to work may be along a trainline. I have a cyclocross I need to get up and running if there is nice hardpack adjacent to the rails. Sounds stupid but there is probably a lot less traffic and it wouldn't be going as fast as the cars. I'll likely build it as a SS so it belongs here. Not to mention this place seems to be a little freer in its thought processes.

when I was younger we used to let trains pull us across town so I can't really talk. But no freight trains are loud so you would have plenty of warning even if you where on the track itself. although that would be a pretty unpleasant ride.
