philly?

I just was wondering if anyone had any info that they could lend me on said city. i am moving there in a few weeks, and was wondering if anyone would care to show me around, perhaps, talk up the bike culture, tell me where to get a messengering job, etc...any info would be very helpful, and i thank you in advance...

thanks

When you get here come to one of the rides.

Thrashin' Thursday
10:00pm
Love Park

Twisted Tuesday
11:30pm

many bikers to talk to... all good friendly people. If you come out on tuesday we get hot pretzels at midnight.

oh yeah, welcome to philly!

pichote 07-19-05 09:42 AM

hey nocoins -

i do thrashin and the pretzel ride. whats your ride?

celephaiz 07-19-05 09:50 AM

So i don't do any of those rides... and i don't know anything about them i just ride with a few buddies around town and try to make a loop or two a day... where do those rides go? how many are on them?

jessefive 07-19-05 10:03 AM

I was wondering if both those rides were still going on. In my neverending quest to actually make it out to one some day.

pichote 07-19-05 10:12 AM

yea, the thrashing ride is very active, especially during the summer.
for those not in the know - there is the slow loop first (about 5 miles) and then a fast loop(about 15?) that doesn't wait for slackers.

the pretzel ride is a little bit more off and on, but they are both great fun.

come early and hang out with fellow bike lovers.

pichote 07-19-05 10:16 AM

sorry - celephaiz: depending on the night and time of year, i've seen any where from 10 to about 35 on thrash.thurs. It goes from love park, up to spring garden, over to the park and river (32nd?), down south of rittenhouseish, and back around to love park. the fast ride goes basically river to river, park, all over the place.

the pretzel ride really varies in attendance but meets at the art museum (ben frank parkway) and then goes over to the big pretzel factory (specific address unknown at the moment).

Sounds like fun just i sometimes get worried about people losing me purely by being more ballsy with traffic lights. Speaking of which, I almost got hit by my roommates car last night were it not for a front brake. He happened to be driving down lombard, probably a little fast but he had the light, and i charge up to lombard on 5th and had to really pull hard and turn in too keep from being hit because i had misjudged the car's speed. then as he passed we realized what we had just avoided and had a good laugh about it.

more on the point, pretzel factory, you mean on washington ave where you get the like 50 pretzels for 8 bucks?

pichote 07-19-05 10:28 AM

that address sounds about right, although i think its more like 100 pretzels :)

i like to consider myself a reasonably ballsy (i know, oxymoron) rider, but even i have trouble keeping up with the fast ride. usually, we all go out for the fun 10-15 mph ride, and then the majority of the group breaks off for night festivities. if the computer didn't dirty up my baby, i could tell you exactly how fast they go on the quick ride - off the top of my head, an average of 20-25?

definetely come out, even if its just to oogle other bikes and make some new friends.

This has nothing to do with bikes, but, if you need a suggestion on a place to eat, drink, and/or hang out...

Soon I'll be returning from the land of the dead (aka South Jersey) and should be out for some of these rides too

while you hit up most everyplace i would go to, i must question why you did not review pif and if the reason is that you haven't been, you may back off your statement on Chloe's rank in byo's

A lot of my reviews on the page are woefully old. I rated Chloe before I had ever been to Pif. However, I have since been to Pif and must agree with you that the quality of the food is better than that of Chloe. However, as far as value goes, I think it's a toss up between the two. The bottom line is, I am horribly lazy and haven't got around to rating Pif (or updating Chloe) yet...

Oh... if you're refering to the poll on the right side of the page... the BYOBs listed aren't in any particular order (it's just a coincidence that Chloe is at the top and Pif is at the bottom). Click on "results" at the bottom of the list, or vote for one yourself, to see which one the visitors like the best.

While i disagree on many of your reviews, my objections are all based on my personal opinions and tastes and fault you for none. However, I like the premise of the site, keep it up.

I have been at EVERY pretzel ride since its start. HOORAY!! I AM THE BESTORZ... but I dont often make it out for Thrashin' Thursday since I have to work so early on fridays. I am trying to come out at least for the SLOW ride, then I can go home and sleep.

anyway, I am kevin, with the Fuji that is covered in tape and spoke cards with the name NOCOINS across the top tube. Sometimes I ride an Orange and White Creamsicle track bike, but most of the time I am on my Fuji Track beater.

speakin' of philly.... and hopin' I don't hijack this thread...

I am working on setting up a single speed\track bike shop near K&A. Any philly boys who'd be interested in helping me set up a website? Also... will be looking for a commissioned mechanic.

email me at acrosound@aol.com

thanks

I usually do the fairmount loop about every night to falls bridge and back to center city. About 10 miles round trip. Pretty late usually, anytime between 10-3 i'm out there.

pichote 07-21-05 07:29 AM

MQRacing -

what kind of site did you have in mind? selling things, just advertising, communication?
i be happy to work on it.

pm me and we'll set up contact info.

Keep us posted!

I can't contrubute much (other than going there). But I live in north philly not too far from there, and that sounds like a killer idea...

zelah 07-21-05 08:03 AM

does philly have hills at all?

The city is not too bad at all, its pretty flat. The burbs can get pretty hilly.

well we have these neighborhoods with names like "Spruce Hill" and "Chestnut hill" oh and "Mount Airy" so basically I'd say we're not kansas, but i wouldn't say SF has any competition coming from our end of the country.

As they said above you have a pretty level ground to deal with most of the time. My Philly friends that ride always rag on me for having my front brake on but riding where I live brakeless is a whole different monster. Giant rolling hills passing through intersections and close corners and what not. The burbs do get pretty hilly.
