Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Single Speed Addiction ?

Last month I built up a couple SS MTBs from some old frames Id had for years .
Used coaster brake wheelsets to begin with , then switched over to freewheels .
Then I converted my Specialized Hardrock. My first vertical dropout conversion.
Next was my Schwinn Crisscross.
How many SSs does a person need ? LOL
I still own a couple multi geared bikes , but Im afraid they maybe in jeopardy before long .
Enjoying riding SS .

I recently converted my 20+ year old, former race bike, to a singlespeed. These days, it's getting about 50% of my ride days. I absolutely love it! This is the only MTB in my stable...

I've got three singlespeeds and until today I had three geared bikes. Sold my road bike on CL this afternoon, and I plan to replace it with another singlespeed. Yes, they are addicting!

I currently have two single speeds. Tripper has a coaster brake which is awesome. One Way just has regular boring brakes haha. Something about having a coaster brake is more fun so I ride Tripper more.

I've been thinking of redoing my Rockhopper, similar to your Hardrock and CrissCross, but I've never done that conversion so I'm afraid I'd mess it up.

I have a Rockhopper, Id love to convert , but it has hydraulic disc brakes that need longer brake tubing to install a set of BMX bars on . Plus Id have to swap out the cranks in addition to converting the rear wheel to SS . A lot of work and cost .
I wish the brakes were mechanical, it wouldnt be a problem.

Mine has Dia-Compe Direct Pull brakes so for someone like you that knows what they're doing I don't think it would be a problem. I'm a newbie when it comes to doing conversions so everything is a challenge for me haha.

Yes, it is addicting. I went through a period where every bike I saw was a candidate for conversion. Slowly that went away. Probably by the time I had 4 SS bikes.

Let's see - currently at 3 fixed-gear, 10 geared - but the geared end of things is about to be thinned down to 6 or 7.

Converted my Schwinn CrossCut this morning. Was able to cut my chain where it came out perfectly without needing any tensioner .
Ill post a picture once I install my BMX bars that just got delivered today.
Now both of my Schwinn hybrids are SSs .
