Surly 1x1 Build

Just getting back into the single speed lifestyle and Just getting back into the single speed lifestyle and I have been a Surly fan and rider for as long as I can remember. I just recently finished building my 2009 1x1 medium frame. Here are the specs,

First off the frame was sandblasted and powder coated Elephant Gray - Thomson stem, seat post and seat post clamp, Salsa Pro Moto bars (shortened), Shimano XT cranks and 32T Chainring, XTR chain, White Industries 18T freewheel, Shimano Deore V-Brakes, Deore Levers, V-Brake Extenders (needed to run 29" wheels), Surly Ultra Hubs, Sun Rhyno Lite Rims, Schwalbe G One Tires and a few other things.

Very nice. Should have stood back a little further to take the pictures, though

I think these pictures are better. I only had the Surly decals on temporarily to see if I liked them. I removed them but left the head badge on.

Awesome! Those OG 1x1 and Rat Rod frames are getting rare. Well done!

Awesome bike, have fun on it. I took the decals off my Surly for a long time, ended up putting them back on just to switch it up.

It's cool but grey? You had the opportunity for such fun colors...Ehh maybe it is because I have had painting on the mind but just never want to strip down any of my perfectly working bikes to do so and then have to spend time and money to build them back up (at least on cables and housing as needed. I would have done a fun purple or pink or something bright bold but it is a nice build

I'm a fan of Surly. Cool bike. I like the gray and I also think it's a good mix of black and chrome parts. I agree, while I like the decal I think the bike looks better without it.

Surly needs to bring that one back. The only true SS that have now with no derrailluer hanger sticking down is the Steamroller which I don't like.

realdeal17680 09-20-21 05:56 AM

I agree Surly should bring this frame back. These frames are hard to find and everyone is asking top dollar.

The hanger doesn't bother me, but you could get a Lowside or a KM and use a dremel cutoff wheel.

I have a Steamroller that I really enjoy riding. The Phil hubs and Campy crank just seem to really make getting upto speed and rolling a real joy. 49t 170mm 16t really works well for flat DFW

It's actually a nice bike but I don't like the geometry and the one bottle cage mount on the seat tube instead of the down tube is probably not a big deal to most people but I can't stand that. If a bike is going to have just one mount it should be on the down tube where it's easier to reach and you can mount a frame pump on the seat tube vintage style. Doesn't even look right being on just the seat tube.

Subject of the thread is a great frame and under the right circumstances I wouldn't mind talking over the build but first I gotta know - do you never get sick of repeating yourself about minor things?

Many SS bikes and riders dont care or want two bottle cages. I do for longer hot rides so use a bar cage on my Steamroller. There are also ofcourse seat cage mounts. You surely know all this and the geometry and tube mount choices are Surly choices that do not please all. There are better choices for SS track bikes with racier geometries.

32/18 with skinny road tires?

realdeal17680 09-27-21 09:45 AM

Correct 32x18 - 700x38 tires

realdeal17680 10-06-21 12:15 PM

Getting ready to start a new build and plan to put this one up for sale. Any thoughts on reasonable asking price?

I missed that. How did you solve the brake track level, and loss of leverage?

gearing is about the same as Salsa Stormchaser. Easy on the level and not too stiff to climb.

realdeal17680 10-06-21 02:39 PM

Not sure what you mean brake track level and loss of leverage?

c_m_shooter 10-07-21 09:03 AM

Looking at the parts, you have way more money in this than any used bike should sell for. The market is still strong though, so good luck.

realdeal17680 10-18-21 07:15 AM

Changed my direction and put on NOS Decals. Thanks to Dan @ Surly for sending these out to me.
