Search Function
 

Alot of people here who consider themselves old-school are quick to jump on someone's thread and tell them to go look for it. If everyone is gonna snap at newbies about posting something without looking around first, then we might as well just make the whole forum a comprehensive locked FAQ and just have one sticky titled "b!tching"
I understand telling someone to search for things that don't change, "like which bag has a stash pocket for my kool-aid". But if its an actually bike part why don't you post on what you think about it or how you like to run yours instead of telling someone to look it up. How are we supposed to be a community when a new guy comes around and we just bark "use the search function"? That just makes us look like a bunch of arrogant a$$holes. Last time i checked, this wasn't the roadie forum (my apologies to all the roadies who aren't arrogant a$$holes).
Nobody here knows everything. If some guy is asking about clipless pedals, or bullhorns, or whats better and IRO or a Pista (IRO by the way) then tell him your insight or ignore the thread, because when you post "go search", the thread that annoyed you in the first place doesn't go away. It just gets moved to the top of list so you can see it the next time you log on.

AMEN. it probably takes about 10 seconds to link to the search and maybe 30 to actually post your opinion.

"Go search" is usually a good reply in the sense that earlier threads may have additional info on the subject readily available. Especially if the poster takes a little bit of extra time and says it nicely, instead of barking it to someone's face.

I've also seen situations where a new member does search, reads through results and then posts additional questions in the old thread. After which they will get promptly flamed for resurrecting the old thread. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

A little respect on both sides goes a long way.

In my experience, the search function on this forum is actually pretty limited. A lot of words are 'too common' and you can't use operators. If you remember when the thread was, you can narrow it down, but most of the time I end up with nothing, or pages of results. Sometimes I'll search, not find anything, then post my opinion.

That said, I have seen a lot of times when the answer to the person's question was actually on the first page of the current posts in the forum. A lot of times even with the title the same, and it would be a thread that had been going for awhile. That will usually get a 'Try the search button' from me instead of a link to the thread...

...because coming to this forum and seeing like, 10 threads about hubs/wheelsets where the same exact parts are being discussed is pretty ridiculous.

phils, velocities, surlies, suzues, campy, shimano hubs, mavic rims, velocity rims, sun rims, paul hubs, 3x, 4x, 2x, 1x, radial, have all been discussed to death. use the god damn search function or suffer the "wrath" of the people who've been here longer than you.

phils are bombproof
levels are apparently the new phils, but haven't been around long enough to be truly tested
velocities and surlies are good, but not great
suzue makes a full range or hubs ranging from utter crap to fantastic.
shimano D/A and campy record are phenomenal, but require more maintenance than a cartridge bearing hub.

rims? open pros, cxp33s are surefire tried and true solutions,
deep vees are trendy as hell and come in colors to match your new ipod!

SEARCH FUNCTION! for crying out loud. learn to use it, or go ask the opinion of a good mechanic.

Back on topic - as far as the sticky FAQ... Doesn't look like it's ever going to happen. Been discussed many times, but no-one's ever figured out how to set it up the best way. I thought [165] might help get something done towards it, but those days are gone :(

i always search before asking a question.. not just to appease the fixie allah but it yields more answers than raising the topic again... many people dont realize that though

I always try a pre-post search, but the Search function absotutively sucks bazongas. I agree with HereNT: unless you're looking for really generic things (like brand names for products) or know the time frame, you're usually SOL.

This is my attempt at hi-jacking the thread and converting it to a "fix the search function" plea to all mods watching/monitoring/reading.

Search is fine, but it has one major problem: it prevents new and maybe better, more indept knowledge to surface. We keep reading the same old opinions about a certain topic instead of getting new, fresh insight. Just because something has been written written a bunch of times in the past does not mean it is true or good.

If you want a road bike without a derailleur hanger buy the IRO.

If you want a true track bike buy the Pista, because it is the best way to spend $500.
