Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

sandbridge is 25 mles from where I live (by the blvd and 1st colonial). on a 95 degree day I almost don't mind jumping in the sh*t brown foamy water of virginia surf.

its like pulling teeth to get the old man out on his bike these days.
when I lived in the city I rode everywhere all the time.
now I have to schedule rides in on weekend mornings at 7am or laps around the neighborhood after work, just so I don't forget how to ride.

you should go down greatneck towards the beach, right before you get to shore drive theres a nice little bike path that cuts back behind the houses and takes you to seashore, not sure where the other way takes you

^^haha, well, not anyone, I was exagerating.
but it has happened.

tehz- hey I went looking for the path yesterday (from the end of it, someone said I could pick it up near 60th street by the water) but I wound up in the state park, instead. that was cool though. really quiet and peaceful. you got my inspired to go exploring... now if it wasn't pouring today...

another decent ride is general booth, theres a bikepath starting over the rudee inlet bridge (oceanfront) and goes for about 10 miles, then you can go see a movie in strawbridge or shop for bikebits!

yeah, this rain is not awesome, but i'm still sprained, so i couldnt do anything anyway

I'm not sure if this counts, but when I ride my bike around the bois de boulogne I get hit on by an average of about 10 women an evening. They all seem to want money though... I'm not sure if they ride bikes either

Well I sure wish there were more female cyclists in my university, or wish I knew more who were my age. It is hard enough looking for fixed riders as it is here... Not to mention female fixed riders.

Every girl here seems to want to go for a guy who has a car, lots of moolah or is a sports jock/pageant winner/mr popular.

it doesn't work in NYC to 'just ride.' even among fixed/ss riders, the scale is just too big. it could also have something to do with the fact that i (apparently) radiate hostility... not even on purpose sometimes!

Chicago folks: I was riding home today and stopped at the six corners of Milwaukee Ave/North Ave/Damen Ave, my favorite part of the commute because it's always a pleasant combination of attractive businesswomen de-training and attractive hipsters on their way to coffeeshops. Today, I stopped next to a really cute blonde on something...couldn't tell if it was SS or fixie. Anyway, we had about 30 seconds at the light, and I got absolutely nothing.

Half a mile later, at Armitage and Damen, she pulls up next to me at the intersection with a big smile on her face, and I pull out my earphones, and she's all, "Nice bike! It's beautiful !"

And I'm all, "Thanks! I stripped it myself!"

"It's so pretty! My husband's got one that's all chrome like that, too. Is that a fixed-gear?"

And you just KNOW he's on a Pista. Oh well, I'm on the right track...if only the beautiful Windy City hipster girls were as outgoing....

THAT should be worth a date right there. no justice!

Ah, the very meeting of Wicker Park in all its glory. Wicker Park has fixies like it's going out of style (maybe it is ). Women who ride bikes in Wicker Park: plentiful. Women who ride fixed in Wicker Park: 1 in every 5.

When my last long-term relationship ended a few years ago, I was fortunate enough to have been with someone who rode. Since that relationship and up until last fall, I swore that I'd only date someone who rode. People said that was tough, that I was perhaps asking for too much. Maybe, maybe not.

Last fall, I met the girl who I'm still with today almost a year later, while on the bike. Sort of. It's a funny story. And it actually involves Craigslist's Missed Connections. You can read about it here: https://www.toybird.org/old/2004/10/26/. The funny part was that the missed connection I had posted yielded 3 emails from girls.

I am fortunate enough to be around women who ride and who I respect above all else. The Girl™ rides SS and everywhere. My roommate and best friend rides fixed -- she went fixed before I did and rode brakeless before I did. One of my other good friends rides SS, on a custom Jonny Cycles frame she recently received. In the DCC, we have two women who ride strong and hard (salome and rusholme). salome will kick your arse each time and pushes the highest gear amongst us all (53x15 at last count though word was she was going to 13).

I've been fortunate enough to ride with gilby and harlot and they are both stellar women.

Men and boys, if you can, meet a girl who rides a bike, regardless if its fixed or not, and do everything you can to keep things good. They're keepers.

What a great story. That made my day. I think you're the only person I've ever heard of that has actually found someone through Missed Connections, even if it wasn't the person you were looking for originally.

edit: Also, Salome's gearing is absurd. I remember she said that her chainring is so big that it practically rubs the chainstay. It's very intimidating to be spinning along at 110 RPM and see the rider in front of you keeping pace at around 80 RPM with little effort.
