also what's the difference between the eggbeater road cleat and the normal one? what are those side arm things for??

Eggbeater cleats are made out of brass which is a very soft metal. If you walk directly on them they will wear out in a few days. Mountain bike shoes are made so that the cleats fit in a recessed area with tread around the cleat. That way you can walk without having the cleat hit the ground. Since road pedals are built for performance only, the sole of the shoe has no tread and the cleat is exposed. The eggbeater road cleats therefore have "pontoons" on the sides so that when you walk around with them they don't hit the ground, instead the rubber pontoons do.

If you have road shoes, the eggbeater road cleats are a must. If you have mountain bike shoes, I don't think the eggbeater road cleats will even fit, so use the regular ones.
