Although this is complete nonsense in my opinion it is what the manufacturers tell you:

Campy - do not grease

Shimano - do grease

Personally I always grease the spindle.

It feels good to grease my spindle.

...

Sorry, had to say it. I grease, because I think it allows it to seat better, instead of going down most of the way, then vibrating down a little farther causing a creak. But in reality, I don't know if it makes that much of a difference... Just do what feels good. ;)

peace,
sam

pedals tight too? what kind of noise? i had lots of noise, creaking mostly, that sounded like it was coming from the drive train but it turned out to be seat stuff... its a longshot though

Haha, some days I feel like this is all I will see on BF, and most of the time it is.

If you grease your spindle you are much more likely to push your crank too far onto the spindle and thus, eff it up. As always a torque wrench is a good investment.

true story. i bought a bike on the cheap from a guy because he swore up and down that the bottom bracket was dying. i threw a new seatpost on it and that mysterious "bottom bracket creak" went away.
