'tis the season...
for fenders! of course. what were y'all thinking?
looks like it's been a month.... or so since an update. Since we got this work remotely mostly thing going, time to goof off. added fenders and skinnier tyres to the RoadTres. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...193066aa9.jpeg Ol' Man Petersen says I can fit fenders with my 700c X 43mm. I say.... maaayybe. I took the easy way a swapped out the Garbel Queens (700c X 43mm) for my Jack Brown 700 X 33 1/3 mm tires. I won't be on the dirt roads much until the spring, so these are just fine. Feels like I got the fenders right on the first go. No noise. No rattling. No struts falling into the spokes. Again. (i told my son how sometimes adding "again" can make things funny.....) Not much else to report. More pics below. I might start a new reportage thread here in the FG/SS group - kind of a "My first bike race in 20 years" kind a deal. It won't be the RoadTres though. I don't want to put Ol' Man Petersen into the grave prematurely. Ok - Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas. I think that lack of flexibility is why some folks report issues with using a regular multi-geared derailleur. my opinion. 2 cents for free info on the interents. internets. |

Perhaps you might shop for an upscale kickstand to go with your kickstand plate. I'm sure it would meet Grant's approval. I jumped on somebody's bike with the a kickback hub. It was kind of a kick. |

I figured I knew better- I’m an engineer!! - and we don’t add grease to newly installed fasteners. Probably there are lubricating properties to the plating used. And I figured all my old bikes have enough grit already in the seat tube I get good stichtion without carbon paste. To go belts and suspenders- I went with greased binder bolt and carbon paste (in the seat tube). i had some fear that introducing carbon to a Rivendell would set off some kind of atomic reaction, igniting the atmosphere into a ball of flame. But so far everything seems stable. Set up for dingle speed or something? - RivBike had the "big" Surly ring, and I think I ordered the Paul Melvinator directly from Paul. It says it can handle a 20t difference. - looking at the tensioner in the small ring, I think I need to remove a couple of links. I've not done it to date as I was going to try out my 2-speed S-A kick back wheel (further moving from the spirit of FG/SS forum....) I need to do a bike-bag update. Roads have been icy or slushy for a few weeks now. So any outdoor riding is on my 3x7 ATB with studly tires. Also - thanks for the bike-compliment. I'm a huge fan of the Rivendell lugs and paint. Hopefully things will fall into place (money, timing, production cycle) and I get one of those Susie Longbolt Hillibikes. Fasteners: Several decades ago I had lots of training in screwing... I mean fasteners and joining. Then over time I've been sucked into more electrical 'stuff'. Different coatings would give different lubricity, as you mentioned. The coatings had to balance the assembly process, so grease and oil would gum up the works (vibratory assembly systems and auto-torque drivers etc. ). Much appreciate getting my memory jogged. And my experience of the slipping post - lots of torque applied and insufficient clamp - is a great real world memory jogger! |

Still very happy with how this bike rides. I’ll pull the 700cX33.333333 Jack Browns when the mud roads transmogrify to dirt & tiny pebbles. Dirt roadriding is really nice. And I’m close to a great low traffic network. (gravel riding sucks- if you’re in an urban landscape and were wondering what all the “gravel” fuss is about. It’s about dirt roads. Not gravel. Boy howdy do people complain in SE Michigan when they got to ride actual gravel!) cheers. |

fenders and 700x32 (i think) Rene Hershey tires are off. Grabel King 700x43 (i think) not really knobbies are ON. Stem swapped to this NITTO YOUNG. I picked it up here on the C&V BF ISO pages. The NITTO face platter is going to a RockHopper rebuild. ~ where the rise and long stem length work more better w/ some Alabastche bars. (and now i've spent.... oy.. the stem, the bars on a repaired parts bin RockHopper.... i should get a financial adviser that I would actually obey....) I really do prefer the level stem. I've not lowered the bars as I'm keeping those brake levers from gouging the top tube. The next change - just a maybe - is drop bars. I have a set of NITTO Noodles sitting in the basement in the "these are nice parts and my wife is letting me take up floor space !?!" area. she did ask how I accumulated so many wheels.... yes. just how. . . because I refuse to listen and obey our financial adviser.... :bike2: ciao! |

Not unpredictably, but just kind of like having something extra.... which is exactly what a bag on a front rack would be.... sloar is sending me a Frosty the River Bag that should be better under seat than my almost acceptable beer tote bag. The beer tote might go to the GUNNAR when I do some longer rides to carry a rain jacket and a PBJ or something. next update will be in the fall when I go back to fenders and those fancy Rene Hershey tyres. OK - that's it. Let's get some more chatter going on here in the SS/FG thread.... even if it is a 3 speed.... :| |
end of winter '26 report
no update since September!
I finally got a winter ride on the RoadUno 3x1. Probably on the very last day. I changed up the brake levers to a kind of mustache bar set up. I've got the same thing on a set of flipped Albastache bars and a set of flipped Albatross bars. (i guess it's like the folk singer says: "last night i dreamt i bought a bicycle just like mine; what is it about never feelin' satisfied?") I got so gung-ho to get out for a nice-day spin, I didn't realize I had not clipped and crimped the brake cables. I also got a mile or so down the road and realized - i forgot my 15mm wrench! I hope i don't flat. About 6 miles from home, I got a pinch flat. I attempted to patch it. No joy in Mudville. . . . or DirtRoadville, in my case. I started walking and called Awesome Wife for an EXFIL. This pic makes the dirt roads look pretty smooth. And most of the time that's accurate. Still being winter, there were a few long stretches of actual gravel rocks.
