Boston Bike Ride Saturday

Ok, details are still being worked out with another party (I'm trying to talk him out of a 9am start!), but how's everyone feel about a quick 27 miles tomorrow? Ok, probably not so quick.

We'd start out in Copley Sq (natch), roll on over to Waltham to see ye olde Waltham Watch Company factory on the Charles. Then we scootch down into Newton to check out the Newton lower falls...cruise back over the river into Waltham, crossing the Stony Brook resevoir in the process, and roll back down Route 20 to the start or wherever folks want to go from there.

Like this. https://tinyurl.com/9nn9a

Yeah dude, I'll go (maybe even with the Steamroller...nah) - just give me a time. I really don't care if we go at 9 a.m. or not; I'm usually up by 8 at the latest.

I just got the thing yesterday. It's a sweet ride (853 frame/fork, full Ultegra STI), but....I don't know how to ride it at all. I feel so dirty coasting. It feels like impending death. And I really don't know when to hit the clicky's and shift, I just do it cause I can.

That's awesome. I've had the same experience when I've been off my road bike for awhile, riding fixed exclusively. The road bike is a sexy machine, but it always feels so foreign, and I have to remember how to ride it. Then, of course, every time I go for a long ride on my road bike, I almost get thrown off my fixie the next time I take it out.

If I hadn't just done a 50 mile ride this morning, and didn't have potentially conflicting plans for the afternoon, I'd be all about making this a SS&FG geared ride. I *might* still make it out, but don't wait for me.

Brian, don't worry, it'll be a nice cozy pace, I think. Nothing serious. I'm even planning on taking some photos. You should be there.

Jacob, it sounds like you got me seriously outgunned. I'm sitting on mid-80s 105 with mismatched cranks and tweaked BB spindle (we all know that story). Anyhow, you should definitely bring it. It'll be a fun little break-in ride.

I officially declare this the bring-em-if-you-got-em roadies ride. I'm even leaving the bag at home and carrying stuff in my--gasp!--jersey pockets.

Multiple gears? I don't know if I can associate with you guys...

Anyway, I'll be at Copley by 2, dirty white Jamie Roy and all.

Just for today, we won't laugh.

I was actually gonna leave the overshorts at home myself, but I realized I need their pockets. I can't find my underseat bag and it's kind of messed up anyhow.

So what happened, Jacob? Did you try to skid to a stop on your geared bike and hit pedestrian?

Hah! Well I got back in one piece, although my legs were totally kicked today. Bleh. I was the only fixie, but didn't get terribly abused. I'm going to zone out now...

Good spin. The lower falls were literally just around the corner when you guys left. There was confusion because in the original cue sheet, that's the starting point of the ride and the watch factory is the midpoint and then looping back on what was our first leg to finish ALMOST at the falls, but not quite.

But obviously it's a shorter ride from Copley to Waltham to start there, so we sliced and diced a bit.

Anyhow, good ride. The little trail through the woods was pretty cute. I'm not sure what you guys read, but I rolled on a few extra and came out with a respectable 38 mi.

Too bad about Jacob's untimely death. Hopefully I'm just kidding.

Erghh.

I forgot about some prior engagements, so I had to duck out.

As a reward: Sit around somewhere in Cambridge on a main road tommorow between 9:30 and 11:30am and you'll probably see my riding around wearing a Paul Revere costume yelling something like "The charity riders are coming!".

Seriously.

I might have to go see if I can locate Paul Revere's ride tomorrow.

I forgot to mention the best part: on the way back I goofed the intersection of N. Beacon & Birmingham Pkwy (hey, it's very tricky, ok!) and ended up on the parkway. I decided to ride it out and see how it all ended. Wound up on Soldier's Field Road and ultimately spun out a few miles on Storrow Drive.

It was pretty cool and not so bad at all.
