Does everyone carry a bag with tools and tubes when they go for a ride. The majority of the people that i see that ride are not carrying anything. What happens if you flat or your chain pops of on your fixie? It happened to me recently when i was ridding home and hit some rough asphalt and the chain popped off. I was only a few blocks from home but i still had to walk.

I take a tube, co2 cartridge and screw on adapter, a bike multitool w/levers, my camera, and whatever random crap I might think I will need. This all goes in a Chrome Metropolis bag. I had to use all these the other night when I flatted about seven miles from home at 11:00pm. :/

I ride with armadillo tires so no need for tubes and pumps. My main thing that I usually bring with me is my trusy Park allen wrench for loose screws. I also always carry my leatherman micra(swiss army knife) for phillips head screwdriver needs. That's about it. Of course, I don't do long ass tours. I ride max 50 miles. The most is 100miles with these two tools.

sometime, i'll take my chain tool just in case for longer rides. I forgot to mention that also take my ipod shuffle and a backpack with wrap around lock. that about covers it. some of my bikes are equipped with racks so I'll carry extra clothing for cool nights.

I have a metro card, which usually has a fare on it as I rarely use it, but I also take my bank card so if I get a flat after the bike stores are closed I can refill the metrocard...

The commuter in <me> calls the shots too.
I always keep a large plastic bag in my kit in case of a downpour.

^---GRRR!!! There is no bag big enough for that, is there?
I've run into troubles enough to believe in the "be prepared" thing. I've flatted on the shortest of trips. I've flatted 3x in one night even. I bring tools enough to overhaul the whole bike...this amounts to a crank bros multi, crescent wrench, funky chain-ring tool, CO2, tubes (more than one) patch kit, whatever lock necessary for the area I'll be in and a first aid kit I swiped from work which amounts to...band-aids! Sounds like a lot, but I hate pulling out the phone and calling for help.

It depends on the ride. Often I will carry my bag with me and have everything in there.
At the minimum, I carry my pump, patch kit, multitool, spare tube, spoke wrench, 15mm wrench, and map. I have taken to wrapping it all "burrito style" in my slightly lower rent hand towel.
As herst pointed out yesterday, you should always carry a towel in case of emergencies. Don't panic.

Sunglasses
Fork
Pen
Cell Phone
Wallet
Tobacco
AAA Batteries
Ibuprofin
CO2 Pump/Cartridge
Hand Pump
Two tubes
Latex gloves (no greasy chain hands here )
Multi-tool (includes tire levers and chain tool)
Extra chain
Bottle of tri-flow
Park Polylube 1000 tube
Black Electrical Tape
Adjustable wrench
14 & 15mm sockets/socket wrench
BB Socket tool
Crank puller
Chainring bolt tool
Allen wrench for my seat
Patch kit
Small phillips and straight screwdrivers
2 slightly mangled cliff bars

Yeah, I carry way too much stuff. But I almost NEVER get stranded. I think the last time that I needed a ride was over a year ago when I got rear-ended and my back wheel was toast....

Preferably no bag, lock in back pocket, cell phone in front left pocket, rubberband holding ID and a few bucks in front right pocket. If anything bad happens I can probably just walk home or to a shop as everything I do in Chicago is within a couple miles.

tubes, tire levers, prest adaptor, pump, shock pump(for my mtb bike)chain tool with some spare pins, adjustable wrench, cank bros multi tool, mulit allen wrench tool, some duct tape, wallet, cell, ipod.
I think that covers everything.
I just find it strange when i see some people riding around with nothing, not even a saddle bag.

Depends on the season. During the summer I have my 15mm ratchet and adjustable wrench, shoes, and lock. Recently I've added my pump and extra tube having finally gotten a flat and had to ride 4 miles home on the rim (god bless deep v's).
If theres a chance of rain I will throw in a change of clothes. C'mon though, how often does it rain in Los Angeles?
