Did I understand him correctly? He put holes in a track bike, a Pinerillo track bike, so he can turn it into a road bike? Why would you do this? He could easily get a nice cheap bike for the same, if not less, amount of money. Why can't people just do more research and stop messing up their own stuff. I think I'd tackle someone if I saw them drilling holes into a italian track bike. Oh well, it's his bike and he's free to do as he pleases, it just a shame a bike is ruined in the process.

I emailed him that he probably will have to find someone to braze on a derailler hanger & that he'll have to cold-set the drops to fit a wider hub. Did I forget anything?

He could just get an internally geared hub...

Don't forget to tell him that he also has to braze on cable stops and bottle bosses.

First of all, it might well be a serious post... considering the amount of JB Weld questions we see around here- as just one example.

Secondly- it is possible to fashion a deraileur hanger that fits over the axel, and is essentially bolted on. He could run a clamp on friction shifter, and use a clamp on cable guide for the housing noodle on the chainstay. He would only need some sort of cable guide under the BB shell. It would be ugly- but it could be done without too much butchery.

A hub could easily be respaced if he used some vintage parts- maybe ran a seven speed freewheel- or go even older. He'd need a road drive train, of course.

trouble is, with all those extra parts, it would be as easy to buy a yardsale bike.

All this criticism coming from the same forum that brought you the guy who bought the Colnago Master roadbike and stripped the original Campagnolo group off of it to make a conversion.

he wouldnt have to weld a hanger on, her could just get one from an old road bike-remember how they slid along the dropouts and was held in place by the axle and a little screw that also hooked into the dropouts. i see no reason why this wouldnt work with track ends

He should get a Sorely Remultiplicator. Just bolt it on the outside of your track hub and voila!

Some of the high-end tri and TT bikes (multispeed, obviusly) now have track ends to snuggle the tire right up against the steattube. They're bacially just a track-bike with gears and a deraileur hanging off 'em.

Considering people are paying thousands upon thousands for them, who's to say this guy has such a bad idea?

Did you remind him that old steel track forks aren't designed to take braking loads no matter how nicely you drill them out.
