Tell me about cranks and BB..

I'm moving on soon to the Cranks and BB for the Thylancine.. (yes, a slow build to be sure). Tell me what you like and what you have and what works. I've been considering Campy Pista cranks and BB, or a Sugino Grand Mighty.. Something smooth, sleek, and hot... (polished prefered) But durable/bomb proof... and I don't want to spend a million dollars.. but will lay down cash for the right stuff.

Looking for ideas outside the norm.

I've got a cheapo Shimano UN-72 BB and I love it. Silent, smooth, cheap, and sealed. Re-packing BB bearings is a pain in the ass and, I think, non-sealed BBs are not worth the trouble (unless you're racing professionally, but that's another story). It mates perfectly with my Sugino cranks as well.

Edit: On yeah - and so far, the Shimano BB is proving to be quite durable.

DA 7710's - so light, so stiff, so shiny

or Miche, just to be cheap and different. And 'cause I have a set that I could sell.

I've run the Sugino 75's with a Shimano BB (107). Worked quite well but I think my chainline was a little off with the Phil mated with a EAI which appraently is more of a 43-44mm chainline. I'd like to go back to the 75's but with the matching 109 Sugino 75 BB. Solid crank, nice low-key looks. The Grand Mighty's are held to a higher standard apparently and they are pretty - whether or not they're worth the extra cost, is up to you.

Right now, I'm running the Campy Record Pista cranks. They are stiff and strong and beautiful. Matched with a cheaper Campy 111m ACH BB, they give me a dead on chainline which was noticeable as soon as I put the two together - the drivetrain is completely silent and solid - no drag. You can really feel the direct drive.

Both are great cranks but I would definitely invest in the matching or appropriate length BB. Your cranks will thank you and your ride will be strong, smooth and blessed.

i run 80s gipiemme's with a 80s campy record bb. i haven't had any problems with the bb even though its ball and cup. from my experience you're probably not going to need a sealed bb unless you ride in the rain all the time or don't feel like changing the grease once in a while.

i recently got some sugino 75s and i ordered the sugino super lap bb to match. everyone i know that has used the 75s is happy with them. plus they're not too expensive and they look good.

i guess it depends on the durability for which you're looking. if you go for sealed it means less service, but i doubt it means more durable. ...as for bomb proof, you could always run steel bmx cranks, but then you'd have to mess around to get the right chainline, and they'd be friggn' heavy...etc...

i am personally not a fan of anything campagnolo, especially their track cranks -- the spider on the current models is offensively ugly.

that aside, however, the sugino grand mighty cranks are very nice, but the champagne anodizing (albeit fairly subtle) can be hard to work into your bike's scheme. i really wish that they made them in silver. get the superlap 75 bottom bracket for that. loose bearing is the ultrajam.

although you didn't specifically mention them, i also have to champion dura ace track cranks, even the 7600 square taper variety. they are incredibly nice cranks. i have a set on my makino. if you go with the the 7710, you'll be amazed at how ridiculously light they are. i must say, however, that i don't really like how the 7710 sticks you with having to used sealed octalink bottom brackets, but alas.

i agree with the champagne color, very unfortunate...

75 and a zen chainring is supercool though.

oh, since you said that you're looking for something outside of the norm, you might want to give the stronglight track cranks a "gander." i am not too hot on them aesthetically, but they are reportedly quite nice for their price. you can use either shimano 107mm sealed brackets or the 75 109mm bottom brackets.

jonb -- i love the sugino zen chainring that i have on my dura-ace cranks. it's a super nice chainring. quiet as hell.
