Next purchase - double toe straps

Last night, rush hour. Heading towards a busy intersection (Madison and Halsted), messenger bag full of groceries. The light turns red and I start to do a little skip to slow down and my right leg goes flying off the pedal and off to the side like a bad karate kick. Not sure how I stopped, but I did it in a very short distance or I would've been toast. I look down and the toestrap was broken in two. And they weren't that old either. Why are double straps so expensive? I might put those SPD's back on there...

Fred - glad nothing too hairy happened. Get em double, get em leather, get em laminated.

I love the clipless though.

Get some Toshi njs straps, very strong. Glad you're ok.

Thanks guys. Looking into the Toshi straps now.

They are pricey. And njs straps are always single. But they will be laminated, and that is key. As with any part of your bike, it's a good idea to have a close look periodically. MKS single laminated straps have a nicer finish. I don't care for the furry finish of toshis, though I have two sets of them.

i just got a pair of the errebi sprint straps (the green ones). they cost about 70 bucks, probably the cheapest double straps, but their laminated and hold your foot great …its just that you can't make them too tight, cause your foot really won't come out.

Fredless-
I might also add that checking your bike completely is important. During a recent overhaul, I noticed that I had cracked the plastic laminate sandwiched between the leather of my straps. Glad I did, as it freaked me out seeing a partially torn srtap with crack plastic acting as my brake and power source. Just b/c they are laminated, doesn't mean they won't fail eventually.

glad your mom didn't see this. she would have freaked.

Leather conditioner is also a good idea if your straps will have lots of wet/dry cycles.

Psssst......

before i switched to clipless (this sounds like the start to a hairclub-for-men pitch, or something), i swore by silva straps. as usual, not cheap, but i love 'em. what was that bontrager quote again? "strong, light, cheap - pick two."

there are some on ebay; here's a set.

Man, when did bindas get so expensive? I used to put binda extras on everything i rode!

shants 10-04-05 01:57 PM

it's all about using hose clamps for straps.

I'm aware of the sarcasm intended, but I might try this during my next fit of boredom.

The probs with double toe straps is that (generally) they cost way more than double the amount of single straps. :(
