Stronglight Crank

I'm about to buy a stronglight crank (~$90 when converted from pounds and shipped to the US from www.ribblecycles.co.uk--heads up). It needs a 111 bb to give 43mm chainline, right? Does it take a JIS or an ISO spindle? Anybody know? The guys in "bicycle mechanics" aren't often the best with track parts miscelany.

don't do it! I placed an order with them 3 weeks ago for the pista cranks. They charged my card an incorrect amount (not small amount like weird conversion rate small, big like 300 bucks) and after 5 email inquiries and weeks of waiting I still havent gotten a response from them.

Until I get some kind of information/ appology/ refund I think everyone should be weary of this scam company.

really?? that sucks! such a good deal!

Ribble are quite well known, and have been around for a while (if it's the same Ribble). I would call, rather than email. All sorts of odd **** can happen to emails, such as them ending up in a spam file etc. Transatlantic rates are pretty cheap now, and for $300, I'd sure do it....

My LBS has the right side arms new for $10, but you'd have to find a pair... I don't know if this helps anyone, but I could grab one for you and ship it if you want.

So after I placed my original order mid September, I finally received something from them yesterday. I originally ordered the campy pista cranks and bb, and a headset. I emailed and called them a lot and they finally said their website was no where near updated, so they assure me they have the miche cranks (a large step down, but a decent price) in stock, so I order. Two weeks later theyre here with odd additional shipping charges and a OOS slip in the bag (yes they shipped internationally in a bag) for the sprocket I wanted. I emailed them today (this is officially the 16th email I have sent them about this order), no response yet.

That said, I have learned one thing for sure. Do yourself and your LBS a favor-- Always buy local. No matter how good the deal looks.

bikes N more has new campy and dura-ace cranks in. and a black cinelli frame built up. have you seen? it's drool all around.

genericbikedude 11-02-05 11:25 AM

Actually, I emailed ribble, and got a reply. Then KI went ahead and ordered, and my "chainset" came a week later, with no import duty. Sorry you had a bad experience. Maybe it was a blip.

I finally checked out the cranks, record bottom bracket and such at Bikes N More yesterday. I have to avert my eyes from the cinelli, for fear of falling over.

(thread hijack. call it "gainesville cranks")

dope, huh? but it's such a shame that Lex didn't build up a nice set of wheels for the Cinelli.

dibs on the used d/a cranks and bb.

i was thinking that if at all possible there should be a critical mass ride the friday of the fest. there will be a buttload of people in town and i think it could be succesful. i'm bummed that there wasn't one while i was living up there..anyways, i'll be seeing you in like 2 weeks.

trackasaurus 11-03-05 10:39 PM

the new stronglights are iso spindles like campy and miche. however if you stick em on a jis spindle they won't go down as far, and to get a prefect chainline you might have to get a slightly narrower bb spindle, maybe 3-4mm. if you don't wnat to go overseas, call up veloshop in portland, www.veloshop.org . molly runs a great business has great prices on track stuff and as an aside, regularily laps the geared category riders at cross.

trackasaurus 11-03-05 10:40 PM

the reason i mention her shop is 'cause they had a few pairs in stock in the fall in 165mm.

The fest critical mass? Do the crusties bring bikes? Can they hop trains with them? Either way, it would be amazing. It's definitely on, especially since noone will be here the last Friday because of that other Thursday holiday.

Momentum 11-04-05 02:53 AM

Stronglight cranks are JIS tapered. I have them on a 110mm Shimano BB to give a good chain line.

Ribble have quite a reputation in the UK. They are very cheap but lots of people have had problems with them, as described in this thread. I have oredered from them with no problems but there are so many bad stories that you would be better to pay a bit more and go elsewhere. Go and check out the cycling plus forum (I am too lazy to link to it) and do a search on ribble. You will see lots more stories like this one.
