quick rim recommendation?
something decent, mid-price, up to daily city riding, not high profile, pref silver.
any input appreciated. ps i searched but ***** changes all the time… anyway it's all pumpkin pies and *****ing about puma right now - could use an equipment thread :) |
Sun CR-18. Affordable, bombproof, silver.
mavic ma2?
Mavic MA 3?
is ma3 the silver polished one? or ma2?
you can get the ma3 in silver, ma2 is no longer made, and has become kinda collectible.
MA2 were polished, but not made anymore. MA3 are a very good rim for how little they cost. Like 16 quid for the plain silver one here.
Personally, I think Mavic Open Pro is just about the best all around rim out there. |
ma3 is a silver one, around $30 at performance and nashbar. is that a decent rim? i've had truing issues with the stock alexes that came on my pista. probably due to them being crappy machine builds, and these won't be. but are those really ok? i am prepared to spend more that that if it's worth it. like $50 per rim or so
dave i'll look into the suns. thanks. |
ma3 is a solid, bombproof rim, but if you don't mind spending a little more, the open pros (as techone said) are the way to go imho.

FIR Net97 - semi-v profile, better looking than the Aeroheads, MA3's, about the same price but very very nice quality. I'm building with these on some Campy Record Pista hubs. They come in silver, black, red and blue anodize. The anodize's are more "royal" and "elegant" than they are "electric" or "bright".

they look really nice (with a little imagination). i saw them online for $38.50 too, so good price. cheers absntr
wow nice suggestion absntr
If you can track down a FIR Super Rialto rim, let me know. They're 35mm deep, similar to the old Campy Shamal/Atlanta deep V's and is pictured here:

wow that's a f'in nice bike
with fugly rims :p |
I'm quite over the deep v at this point, unless you can get some really deep V rims.
I do still like a bit of a profile (I hate the box look) and the Net97's are beautiful rims. They'll be going on my Colnago. Gotta keep it all Italian! |
ambrosio makes something similar, no? slight profile, not totally boxed but not uselessly "aero"...
Does anyone know if there is a good source for Ambrosio rims in the US?
FIR are italian? we may have a winner in that case. i also wanted to keep my bike all italian, even though it's not a colnago. they look great too.
most shops can get ahold of ambrosios through some distributor or another, right? they come up on ebay now and again too... FIR are awesome. they have this one super classic looking box section rim, nonmachined, and dark anodized. mm.
Yep, Ambrosio makes a nice similar rim called the Balance, which also comes in similar colours:

that could be it, but a newer version. the ones i have in mind were from 3 or 4 years ago and have very minimal stickering on them... just the little FIR logo between 2 spoke-holes and then a little italian flag between another 2 spoke-holes. minimal, classy, clean.
did anyone mention velocity?
Yep, up above, the Aeroheads, or Fusions. They're good rims, but lately I've been feeling the Italian and nice quality at a cheaper price point.
yea, razors have been mentioned :)
