So all this about whether or not to wear a helmet... I'm wondering what kind of helmets people wear.

I wear a gyro helmet, but it looks as cool as if i decided to take a pot out of the cupboard and wear it on my head.

Any links/pics of non-standard / semi-cool looking helmets?

ya.. but thats a pretty standard bike helmet

im looking for something a bit more non-traditional/fun. that oakley helmet while ugly as f*ck and totally not practical, is definitely in the right spirit.

cmon.. lets see some pics! something along the lines of....

You need a fixed-specific helmet. Road helmet conversions are, like, lame. You'll spend more converting your perfectly good road helmet than just buying a fixhelmet!

If you care about style and not function then don't bother with a bike helmet. Just get a hat that looks good to you, or get some good product and pimp a massive fro. I like my Bell Alchera... cheap, light, good air flow, and ther are some vents in in large enough to fit my lock through so I can leave it with my bike.

maybe a bell faction is more along the lines of what you are looking for. not super breathable but more along the style of what I was looking for in a helmet

You may look at BMX / Skateboard helmets, you could start a new trend wearing them on a fixed. Or possibility a snowboard helmet.

i'd look for some bmx/skateboard type of helmet since you can throw them around like hell and they won't break. i had some snazzy specialized helmet i used for road racing and the thing cracked after being careless with it and tossing it around. i have some ghetto bucket head thing for my fixie but nonetheless, it has speakers built into it which is geeky/lame/gimicky.

personally, i say rock a hockey helmet with a facemask. start something new. throw in hockey hair and that would be totally fresh.

or this. just be sure to pick up a phony accent with it as well.

I see everyday commuters / students wearing bmx/skate type helmets. I wonder, why? Were the "bike-lookin'" helmets too uncool? Anyway, I wish these peeps (usually "I just bought a bike! people) would start doing some helmet worthy tricks.

...and simply using the bike lane is not a trick

Hmm, perhaps. I bet Target sells far more low-end BMXs than low-end adult bikes.

I rock a BMX style helmet. I used to do some mountain biking and urban stuff and wanted a helmet I felt more comfortable scuffing up on minor crashes with. Rather roadie helmets scare me more because I worry about dropping them and damaging them (they actually warn against dropping your foam helmets because it can cause small fractures in it), whereas if I drop my hard plastic skater helmet-eh, big deal it just gets a little scuffed.

oh and I hate looking like I just beat up some tri-athlete and jacked his lid when I'm wearing tornup shirts and rolled up jeans.

Depends on the day...hot days I wear an older specialized mtb helmet or just my Syncros cycling cap. Cold days usually sees my old pink protec skate helmet or a toque (that's a beanie to you non-canucks)

I use the Giro E2 with the visor off for street riding and I put the visor on if I need it for the trail or rainy street riding.

How do you keep it fresh? Wearing food on your head is the new white belt, or so I hear.

I just ordered a Giro Eclipse:

My girlfriend wears a Bell Metro:

Both are nice helmets that retail for $80-$100CDN.

i think the metro is kinda ugly... i generally think ppl should buy what's comfy.
i do, however, kind of like the fact that it's got a light slot up at the nape.

more visibility is good.

unless you have an invisible bike. anybody else out there with an invisible bike? i like mine.
