Phil Wood makes a measuring rule but Marcus has an old Phil Wood caliper. I think he has an extra, I should pick that up.

I have many sets. I collect them. Especially useable plastic ones.
Use them every day. Keep a nice set on my night stand.
Got lucky with a cute medical student one time because I had a set on me.

Mitutoyo digital baby! Yeah I "should" be able to get by with a dial one, but when it's late at night and I need to measure something and not flub it up, digital baby!
Starrett digital would be really top of the line, both are really, really good.

at the moment, bearings and an axle diameter. But I really wanted to know if it was the sort of tool I'd like to have around.
Do you ever eat a lot of pie and then suddenly wonder about all sorts of things related to your bike? Sometime the ruler doesn't do it in answering those questions.

Calipers are convenient..But as an essential tool..TOrque wrenches would come first on my list of needed tools.

Mitutoyo all the way.
Except my big one, which is 60cm Fowler. Enco $180 bucks.
Same length in Mitutoyo costs ~$500. I do notice a big difference in quality though.

While we're talking about it, I think that measuring bike frames and parts is a very good way to learn about them. I sure got my eyes opened when I started looking at the numbers.

Yes, but really because I reload ammo. My digital calipers have come in handy at bike shops because they save me a trip. How many times have you all been told by your LBS, "yeah, this should fit fine," only to find out it doesn't when you get home? Now that I'm going to start building my own rims, the calipers will come in handy with hub measurements as well. You gotta make sure the factory specs are correct, as we've found out with the Nashbar hubs.

You mean your own wheels?
If you're building your own rims I'm really impressed. You might need more specialized equipment than just calipers though.
