sugino 75 BB?

I just purchased a new set of cranks with matching sugino 75 BB. I have all the tools I need to do the job, and IM pretty good with mechanics. So I started with the fixed cup, put a fair amount of grease on the inside bearing race, installed cup. Next, greased the bearing and installed into fixed cup(bearing face facing outwards/the most exposed part of the balls facing out?). Next installed the spindle with a little grease, then installed second bearing facing out. Next I installed the adjustable cup until seated against bearing, installed lockring and began the adjusting process, this is where the frustrasion takes place, no matter how loose I make the adj. cup to the point with no play its still seems like the cranks are still to tight. I mean if I have one crank arm installed in the vertical posistion with no chain attached it should swing with no problem, right? is there a break in process with the BB being a little snug at first? or am I just missing something here. This is my first time dealing with cup and cone BB and I dont want to take the bike in to get this problem resolved. Any help would be great.

Cheers, Scott.

are you using a pin spanner to hold the adjustable cup while you tighten the lockring?

check this thread out, it has a walk through of the entire installation process, with pictures. hope it helps.

Also, if you are riding on the street, especially in the rain or dirty areas (construction zones etc) be sure to clean and regrease the bb every couple of weeks. Every month at the very least. I've been told (by an extremely well-respected mechanic) that the sugino bb is one of the smoothest on the market, but will be ruined quickly if not well kept up.

i don't necessarly agree with this. i've been riding a sugino 75 bb on the street for roughly six months and have only repacked it once. granted, i don't ride in the rain as long as i don't get caught in it, but nevertheless the bottom bracket is still in great shape. just keep an eye on it and you'll be fine.

I don't speak from experience. I asked Bill Ron about the durability problems I had read about with the 75 bb, and that was the advice he gave me. When I told him I was going to be riding mostly on the street, he suggested I use a sealed cartridge bb.

i can't really tell from your description,
but you might've put the bearing retainers in backwards..
they're supposed to look like this:

otherwise, perhaps you just haven't found the perfect adjustment quite yet...

as far as repacking the bearings;
i can't imagine anyone needing to pull their cranks every coupel weeks..
