Multiple bike handlebar setups
 

Getting ready to finish my second "real" fixed gear. My current commuting/fscking around bike has chopped-flopped bullhorns with a front brake. I'm wondering if I should change the setup for the second one. Brakeless, road drops, track drops, risers, or keep it consistent with the one-braked chop-flops? What did you owners of large stables do, and why?

the way i see it, different bikes are gonna handle differently, and put you in different positions. react to that. ride a bit and consider where you want your hands for how you find yourself riding that bike.

i just put risers on my fixie and all i can say is i love it. i can still skid/skip and the riding position feels alot better than drops or bullhorns. i am usually riding both those near the steam anyways and rarely in the drops or hunched over my bullhorns. it feels like a cruiser except it hauls ass.

I have multiple handlebars that I often switch around with my two bikes. Bullhorns, straight bars, riser bars, track drops. No need to pick only one.

If you're not sure what you want use whatever you got. If you've got a set of road drops around, use those. they might turn out to be just what you want, but if they don't, they'll at least give you a better idea of what you do want.

It's a theory anyway. I'm currently wrestling with the idea of changing up bars on 2 of my bikes. I THINK i want drops on the cross, and bullhorns on the fix

Why so many setups? Are each of the bikes that different?

Do you have a removable-faced stem?

all are on my frames. RAP will be my winter cyclocross ( Nitto bar and stem)aka horse trail bike.

Alma Pura has a sloping toptube so road stem and bars (cinelli crit and cinelli stem) are there so I can sit up. I had this set up Bar and lever on my messenger bike for 15 years due to the fact riding with them makes it easier on my hands and easier handling OS packages on my bars.

Level has Nitto pista bar and stem.

3ttt bar and stem from the old messenger days and pursuit racing.

I used to run bullhorns all the time, and I liked them (Syntace rules). Now I've got some riser bars on my fixie, and it's amazing how much more comfortable I am. Plus they're blue anodized, so how can you go wrong?

On one of my bikes I do. The other is not.
The bike with the close faced stem usually stays pretty constant (track drops).
But the bike with the open faced stem gets its handlebars changed fairly often.

1) road frame, "normal fit"=> road drops about 5cm below saddle
2) beater, ridden slowly and upright (with kids, off-road), smaller frame => bullhorns on rising stem
3) fix, smallest frame, most aero position - bullhorns about 20cm below saddle.

All comfortable, serving different purposes.

i run a couple different setups and mostly ride brakeless, but if im commuting or riding it ss i throw a front brake on
these are what i run:
flipped and chopped
dropbars
hip wide flatbar with brake for riding to work
riser bar w/ oury grips

each setup has its own stem so there is no need for a removable face plate

But apparently there are other people. In the Alleycats thread I just found out about one in New Haven. I would totally do it (with no prior knowledge of the city) except I'm promised to a party in Massachusetts that night.

I like road drops because of the different hand positions.
