Puma Presents: Fixed Gear 101

A friend of mine picked up the new issue of Vice yesterday and inside there was a little booklet titled "Puma Presents: Fixed Gear 101." He knows I ride fixed so he gave it to me this morning.. I'm at work so I haven't really had time to look through it very closely yet though.

Pretty funny.

i think i remember seeing some puma booklet for a ss/fixie they were selling under their name. you could get socks, a backpack, shoes, etc to match. I don't remember the details other than that it looked cheap (probably wasn't) and it made me want to throw up.
terribly designed, too.

I am more disgusted that it was included in an issue of Vice than anything else.

so write one better.

I'm guessing its the same thing they have on the FG:101 on the www.pumaville.com site

rithem 10-19-05 08:06 AM

Marcus, you know someting about this.

turd 10-19-05 08:22 AM

pls don't ANYONE make this thread devolve into another vice/hipster-bash fest.. thx in advance. now, as was mentioned in another thread, i think some ppl were pleasantly surprised that the content was pretty on-point.

spud 10-19-05 08:27 AM

Is the Puma Control Courier bag too big for me?

hyperRevue 10-19-05 08:36 AM

I kind of dig the illustrations of that guide/book.

Yeah, the illustrations are pretty great actually. The whole thing seems pretty decent now that I've had a closer look. I mean, it's obviously kind of corny, but it could be far worse.

If we needed proof of fixies becoming total hipster items, then the inclusion of a booklet made by puma in vice magazine is certainly it. Not that there's anything wrong with the hipster aspect, IMHO. The popularity doesn't really affect me in anyway.. in fact it might just wind up creating some great new products/companies. I don't read vice really, but it's for other reasons than cool/uncool. :P

Didn't realize this was in another thread.. sorry for the repost - I only did a quick scan of subject lines on the first few pages of the forum.

I just read through it, and well ... it was pretty spot on at points. they have the PDF on the pumaville site that you can read through. After a scan, I can't say that I can really argue with any of the points they mentioned, well except squid's little ...

“When I started riding fixed-gear, I was a
menace, like crashing into stuff. All over the
place. But, my motivation was to be able to
keep up with my brother and the crew. So,
I was just going for it. Was like, “I’ll
stop—aahhh!” And crash into the back of
something—that’s how I’d stop, you know?
I’m not going to hate on anyone that’s doing
that, cuz I did it, too.”

... but only because i'm not a fan of getting run into.

Yeah, I am glad PUMA invented fixed gear books. thank god for that.

I would gather that the PR vamps had their way with a lot of what was said, which is typical.
Nice gesture, at best, on behalf of Corporate America.

While the material is on-point, it is not new. Just re-marketed and flashier than the numerous threads here and other places (63xc.com, etc). Really, what is going on here? PUMA wants new sales.
"Hmmm...I just picked up some Romas online...what's this? Oh, a book on bicycles. I will build one and get more PUMA clothing to match."
That is what scares me. Well, that and the potential for the streets of America littered with the rotting corpses of unaware, fixed gear tyros - dressed in the latest PUMA fashions as seen in FG 102: What to Wear to Improve your Compskids. Maybe they could market the "ghostbike" initiative next. (note: this is sarcasm)
Yes, PUMA has done some nice things for the messenger community and track cycling - I do recognize that. But Denmark still has curtains.

I am all for cycling, but cycling done correctly.

I kept this as a Corp bashfest just for turd.

OOOOH.

Everything New York Messengers is sooooooo coooooool.

I wish I was as fast as them.

Well we will see if they come out to the track to prove what they got.

**** Team Puma(except for squid and polish hammer.)

my only beef with it is the misspellings. aside from that, i'm very "eh" towards it. it's the same information that you can get by logging on to any of the 3 billion or so fixed gear bike sites.

i am, however, happy that they ripped into bumbike setups. the less suicide hubs i see, the happier i am going to be.

Are you being silly again?

Will I see YOU at the track SR...? No exceptions.

I notice no 'models' on the bikes uploaded, coincidence?

Still raining I see.

Super Rookie 10-19-05 10:08 AM

Name the time and place.

Preferably a couple of months in advance so I can get my drug program figured out.

but, I only race on real tracks.

isotopesope 10-19-05 10:08 AM

that thing is almost as big of a toilet as fixed magazine.

mcatano 10-19-05 10:16 AM

If all this results in me being able to order vans Old Skools in custom colours again - like you used to be able to do from the back of Transworld - I'll be a happy pappy.

I have no idea how the two things are related, but you know... it's not like this thread is headed in a useful direction anyway.
