alright I am going to ****ing soap box here so pleas excuse the rant.

Sure our tax money gets spent poorly, sure at times our government is crap, and sure we all could use a little extra money.

For f***s sake people suck it up! Quit crying like a little f'ing baby unless you are dying of hunger and pay the G*D damn taxes like you care that you don't live in a Communist country. Or if you think Communism is better then get the f'k out and go to a place that wants you. Crap, think about the implications of everyone dodging taxes, or if you think its just you then think about all the SUV drivers that think that they aren't contributing to the gas crises, global warming, and the war in Iraq.

Sorry, I am done now. Do whatever you want, its a free country.

There are still companies that don't take taxes out, where you work as an independent contractor. But the thing is, as long as they have your name and report it(and they do), you're still expected to pay taxes. You can go for a long time without filing, but it will definitely come back to haunt you.

The move is to find a company that will let you work under a fake name, etc... Used to be a couple like that.

i think our goverment's financial interest would be far better served going after top-shelf white-collar criminals that dodge their taxes (HUGE revenue there) and bilk their employees out of their hard earned wages and pensions. a messenger who doesn't pay $5k to $10k in taxes per year is a such a miniscule part of this problem - not to mention that *maybe* that tax burden should be shifted to the rich.

and i have a big problem with the way our government is spending my tax dollars recently. first among the complaints is a massive war in Iraq that's running a tab of over $200 billion. and it's not going to stop. giving away our surplus a couple of years ago, and creating a deficit by cutting taxes for the wealthy wasn't a gem of wisdom either.

did you know that if you leave the country, as a U.S. citizen, you are required to pay federal income tax from wherever you live, for the rest of your life? that's just extortion.

sorry for the politics, folks, just my .02

I agree with you entirely but you should either pay the taxes (like a responsible citizen, regardless of your dislike of our government) or you should make a statement, and not paying $5k in taxes, is not a statement. Too many people hide behind the "I'm making a statement, so its ok" line when they are not doing a damn thing about what they are avoiding. If you don't want to pay for ideological reasons then you better damn well be writing a letter a week, lobbying the government, running around capital hill, and trying to actually make a difference rather then sitting a home spending your well saved tax money on beer. Oh, and don't send form letters, or mass emails, people on the hill give as much time to those as you gave to sending them.

Milo

edit: if you are a US citizen living in france then your federal taxes help support the US embassy, and in case you don't know that's the place that saves your ass if the sh*t hits the fan.

Yeah, just looking at their operation gives one the impression that's how they roll...one of their riders, Stewart was telling me something along those lines once.

Actually, probably not. If you're a US citizen living in France, chances are you're going to get a credit for the French taxes paid on your income under the US/France tax treaty. Since your French taxes will probably be higher, you won't pay anything to the US, though you still have to file.

The reason you're liable for taxes as a US citizen living abroad is soley so that you don't leave the country just to avoid paying taxes. Uncle Sam wants to get his.
