I've been searching for a place in central Toronto to get frames powder coated for awhile now - I finally found a place and it turns out it's two doors further down the street from the place I work at. Here's the info in case anyone in the future is looking for the same thing.

Mayfair Plating - 96 Carlaw (Carlaw & Eastern). You can get there by the Queen streetcar (walk 2 blocks south from the Carlaw stop) or take one of the busses down from Pape Station.

If there's time tomorrow I'm going to head in and get some pricing info - It'll be posted here when I find out.

I got mine done by Spectrum, over by Queensway and Kipling. Not exactly central, but I have had 3 bikes done there and paid between 20 and 60 dollars for frame and fork. Hard to beat price and they did it quick. I can put up some pics if anyone wants to see the quality of their work.

Sonofabiatch. Mayfair looked at me like I was nuts when I asked about powdercoating. It seems my source was a bit off. They recommended Quattro or something out in Scarborough, though.

Well, I have had 3 bikes powder-coated by an industrial powder-coater that does huge orders and we just threw my frame and fork in with the order and it got done. Very cheap and I guess, under the table. I paid 60$ for my Ciocc because it was just my frame being done, nothing else. I had two other bikes, a Miele and a Colnago, done for 30$ and 20$ respectively. The Miele was 30$ because it was a matte black and the Colnago was supposed to be 30$ too but something got messed up and there was a bit of run-off on the head-tube, so they only charged me 20$ for the frame and fork which was fine with me as it is hardly noticable. Both of them were thrown in with a big order of patio chairs being powder-coated, which made the whole thing pretty cheap.


Oh great, thanks, I forgot about that. I actualy think that I might get my next project professionally painted. Powder-coating is great but I think it fades a bit with time. Sure, it is cheap to re-do it, but a nicely painted bike is just so cherry lookin'.

I thought it lasted longer than wet paint?

It is much more resilient, yes, but if you choose a lighter colour (which I did with my Ciocc) you can notice that it will fade over time. The other two bikes are black, so it is very hard to tell that they have faded.

Jet, the place your brought your bikes too, did they remove the paint from the frame first? I'm thinking about getting a nice steel frame, getting it powder coated matte black and fixing it up as a nice fixie. But, I'm not sure how hard it is to get the old paint off, and whether it has to be perfect for the powder coating to work.

I went to blast and coat out in miss. 75 for frame and fork including medium blasting and single colour powdercoat. No complaints.

Blast & Coat charges $125 not $75. At least not anymore. Spectrum charges $75 for blast + one coat.

Does anyone have information on Spectrum? I can't find anything about them even using canada411 or google.

I just spoke to spectrum, if you want a colour that he has to set up specifically for you, you're looking at approx. $125. If you are going to do a colour that he is doing for something else (blacks being popular) he said it would be approx. $50.

If you're looking at black powder coat, he says he does semi-gloss at least once a week, and matte pretty rarely.

He does not strip the existing paint.

I called a few other places I found in the phone book and the cheapest I found was $125 for just the powdercoat. One place was a minimum charge of $500!

Update: I called Blast and Coat which is in Mississauga (905) 625-7739, and to do a black powder coat and sand blasting was $75. I'm not sure the cost of other colours.

Different colours/finishes do not cost any more/less. The thing about powdercoat is the frame has to be completely free of any oil, grease marks. sandblasting does this. As soon as you touch the frame with yer hands you will leave oily fingerprints behind and these can come thru in the finish. Thats why I use Byers Bush Jetcote. They do the stripping and blasting on site so the frame is properly prepared.

I think you may pay more for certain colours because they have to set it up for you. If they can put your bike in with another bigger order and spend an extra two minutes doing your bike, rather than having to spend 30 minutes setting up the process just for your bike, it would be cheaper. The savings isn't in the actual powder coating, but in the setup time, I suppose.

That's my thought on the matter anyway. I just know that I was told it would be more if it was a colour that they were only doing for me.

At Jet the difference may be the time you wait. I have had approx 30 frames done by them. It always takes 10 days for my stuff. So far I have had black..semi and gloss, orange semi, blue semi, green semi and red gloss. They were all the same price and I never got them sooner than the usual 10 days. I guess if I asked for an unusual colour/finish it might be more or take longer. Jet is a big operation so they prolly go thru the colour range on a regular basis.

How much does it cost to powdercoat with Jet? What's their contact information?

I've heard (from a wet painter) that a powdercoated finish is dulled if exposed to grease or oil. Is this true or part of a bike painter disinformation campaign?
