top tube pads
what's the deal with these velcro-looking/squat-bar shoulder padding looking type top tube pads????
are they so that you can sit on your top tube more comfortably while holding your bike?
someone please explain

That is one of the reasons. The main reason for having them is to your bar does not dent your top tube in case the swing around and to protect your toptube from scratches when locking up. On top of that it makes "landing" on your top tube not quite as painful. It also makes the top tube more comfortable against your knees, legs, etc when doing certain tricks. To sum it up, it is good for your bicycle and good for you.

If you think about the frame pad for a second i am sure you can figure it out. Think of old BMX bikes. Pad says it all - it pads the bike from whatever.

this is nOt bmx...and I was curious as to why people were using them...
were they doing trick stuff? (skids where you somehow lock your shin or knee to the top tube)
were they using it to sit on ? (and I often sit on my top tube....a possibility that I THOUGHT OF MYSELF! )
and...since I never was one to be aware of all the times my bike got scratched leaned up against something or by my handlebars (I now realize that my mark, from brake, is on downtube )...cause I never gave a fuk and my frame still looked fresh as I wanted it......
I never thought of that
thanks, all who replied with something constructive

First, I don't think Benny's post was meant to be snide, but who knows.
Second, often times to skid without getting out of my saddle I lock my knees around the top tube and the pad comes in very handy for that.

Geez.. teiaperigosa - no reason to get all worked up. I was not being snide at all. When you pad something you are protecting it - so a frame pad plain and simple does that.
a pad is a pad no matter what type of bike it is on - bmx or track. It does the same thing.
sorry i struck a nerve

I would love to go ride, but I can't right now...working on it.
and...believe me...no one is worked up...and, no...you didn't strike a nerve (not even close)
your remark WAS (at least) a little "snide", and I simply explained why it shouldn't have been...I'm sure you meant no harm...I don't
it's as simple as the fact that I prob wouldn't let you slide saying that **** to me in person, so...why here
anyways...boa noite (good night)...e....ate logo (until later)

Frame pads are for people like myself who did such a lousy job repainting old frames that they want to avoid the perpetual embarrassment of flakes of Krylon dusting away every time the wind blows. Oh well.

I have a Jamis Sputnik (among other!) and I think I want to get a top tube pad for all of the above reasons (including style) but also to cover-over the rear brake cable and zip-ties that keep it in place as this bike has no welded brake stays. Cheezy looking and the cable tends to float around the tube.

Ahh, 2005. Bird Flu was rampant, Bush was prez, the White Sox won the world series, and people seriously wondered what purpose those new-fangled top tube pads served.

Your cog is slipping.
I rock a tt pad. It comes in handy when I lock up and I also just happen to like the way they look. No crazy colors or anything...just a black pad on my black frame.
Some people think pads are lame. To each his/her own, right?

I have an beater mountain bike set up as a s/s that I use to walk/run my dogs. I put a pad on to protect 'everything' from the braze-ons for the brake cable. I've got more then one divot in my a** from doing a hard stop, because they do something stupid and dog like. My pad is pipe insulation secured with duct tape.

i think it's smart to protect your ****, you're obviously using it based on its purpose, not fashion. Anyone who would knock you for it is obviously naive.

The pad I use is pipe insulation from the hardware store that already had a a sort of thin, rubbery covering and sticky seam seal where the insulation was cut. I think it's designed for outdoor use. I purchased a 6' section because that was all they had but it only cost like $3.00. Couldn't be cheaper. I cut it down, wrapped it over, pulled off the little plastic strip that covered the sticky seam and sealed it. I put a touch of velcro I had laying around on either end just to cinch it in place. It still moves easily for when I lean it up. Actually looks good and with 6 ft. of it I have a lifetime supply. I think that stuff is the way to go and as someone else noted you can always get other materials to gussy it up. If you can't or don't want to sew just buy some of that velcro strip that has the glue side - it's designed to stick to things. So, a few more bucks and you can have wraps for everyday of the week and the stuff just velcros on and off.
