BIG dang Chain

Yeah. So I sighted this bike downtown (DC) yesterday over by City Sports on 7th. it was a green track bike w/CXP33's, phils, and this ENORMOUS chain. The side plates were more rounded rectangles not hourglassy.

it looked way bigger than 1/8" chain. Probly 3/16" I guess i could have looked closer but I didn't.

Also had some mongo-ass chain tensioners. very cool and wish I took a picture but alas twas not possible.

anybody know what I'm talking about?

sounds like a Wippermann BMX chain.

Did it look like this?

i have an extra rear cog for my motorcycle...

i've been contemplating sticking it on my cruiser and running motorcycle chain...

DOOD Your photos are always so nice. It may be that one but it is hard to tell. the links looked taller than regular links too. and a little more squared off at the corners, like rounded rectangles.

but it looked more like that than the rolled up one in the can that shot posted. it wasn't that at all.

what is the one in your pic?

I run this chain on my fixie/ss mtb. Haven't used it long enough for a durability report, but it is beefy!

I tink it was the wipperman.

The one in my photo is the Wipperman/Connex super heavy duty.

All the cool kids ride garage door opener chains.

If you have to have it, you can order it here: http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?Affi...=30&SKU=CH1416. I've used Alfred E. Bike once before and it was ok.

Holy ***** These chains are heavy! The KMC is 300g heavier then the Sram PC-1. People pay all sorts of money for that kind of weight reduction in a frame! I might buy one anyway for the looks, though, despite being something of a weight weenie...

Edit: it's the Wipperman that's 670g, but the KMC doesn't look much lighter, either...

I should probably point out that with chains this size, if you run any cog smaller than 18t, your chain is going to eat your spokes.

LóFarkas 10-25-05 01:52 PM

Depends on hub and cog, doesn't it? I seem to remember there's lotsa space btw my cog & spokes, but I'm too lazy to lift my @ss off and have a look. The bb lockring I have on acting as a spacer sure helps:D

Oh my gosh! Thanks for this thread. I've been trying to figure out what type of chain that was. I saw one on the fixed gear gallery, and even tried contacting the owner to get the specs. See the bike here:
