Windsor "The Hour" Single Speed on Ebay?

Hey All,

I'm looking to get into a fixed gear just for giggles, and it look slike BikesDirect (or someone using that name) is selling this on ebay:

I've never heard of Windsor before (so shoot me), but some of the components look good. Is this thing worth $350? It's certainly affordable. Why are they dumping them on Ebay?

Posted twice in the past weeks.

My friend just bought one as a back-up bike.
The componets are not good.
Though the frame is totally functional and sturdy.
For the price it's a good kick around/back-up bike.
Either that or just buy it and plan on doing a fair amount of upgrading.

pm user, bmxdan, he has one. He rides it everyday. He has worked into a really great looking bike.

chicagoamdream 10-31-05 11:49 PM

It's a rebadged Colnago.

mrbertfixy 10-31-05 11:54 PM

yeah, i got a khs, which is almost the same thing for almost the same price. mine had the sugino 75 cranks on it though, so no upgrade there.

definetely get new wheels/tires (IRO's and gatorskins for me). and saddles are usually a personal preference. once you're done, it'll probably end up costing closer to $800.

brake/lever $50
wheels (IRO) $200
tires $60
bullhorns $20 (though ironically i've switched back to drops)
seat $80
clipless pedals $60
cogs $25 each.

HAHA. That really is some terrible false advertising.

One of my bikes is a Windsor fixie, and I have to say that the only Windsor that was a rebadged Colnago was the bike that Eddy rode himself.

Windsors (in the 70's and early 80's) were Mexican made colnago knockoffs, made specifically for the Mexican market. Really really fun bikes. All have geometry based on Eddy's bike, so imagine a 80% track geometry, with a little bit of roadie in there.

Needs a new rear hub out of the box.

So what is the final verdict? Why are the parts everyone says are so bad really bad? Poor bearings do the spokes tear out of the hubs or rims? So far no quantifiable reasons, just opinion. Lets hear some examples of failures or horror stories?

Is this due to catastophic failure, or is it a street cred thing? If I have to replace the rear hub/wheel at some time do to less than stellar life, I would rather just run the included one into the ground until I found a deal on ebay, or learned exactly what I wanted/needed to replace it.

If it is catastrophic failure, I could ride it until said failure and then launch the lawsuit..should get enough money to buy a custom fixie with full PW!!!!

edit: P.S. Which IRO is anywhere near $150 more than this bike delivered? The cheapest steel frame bike I sw on their site(currently availalbe) is the Angus at around $700 delivered...

chicagoamdream 11-01-05 10:24 AM

DIY Mercier/Motobecane/Windsor thread:

Why is this bike so cheap?
We already discussed this last week.
It's junk.
The frame is fine.
It has cheap components. It will fall apart.
No, it's fine, my friend rides one, it's great.
Seller looks sketchy.
What hubs are these?
No, I bought one, they're alright, no problems.
Spend $150 more to buy an IRO.

Cut and paste, arrange in any order preferred.

mattzees 11-01-05 12:56 PM

Yeah, you're right. I'll probably go with an IRO because they look like a better deal. Sorry for touching off the poopstorm.

hyperRevue 11-01-05 12:58 PM

You will be much happier.
Much better deal in the end.

No sweat. I feel like it's my calling to answer questions about these bikes.

But, definitely, IRO. The Angus is sweet, and the new wheels should seal it for you.

mrbertfixy 11-01-05 04:03 PM

if it weren't for the sugino 75 cranks, i'd would probably have gotten an IRO.

and the next time i'm looking for a good frame for not too much $$$, it will def. be an IRO.

ZappCatt 11-01-05 04:15 PM

Classic idiocy from the "Windsor" folks.

My email to them:
> What is the fork rake on the Windsor track bike?

Their reply.....

"This is proprietary"

ZappCatt 11-01-05 05:22 PM

Whoops, sorry about that. Just me showing my ignorance.
Thanks for setting me straight.

griffin_ 11-01-05 05:54 PM

comes with the same crankset and chain ring as my rush hour, and better pedals

i wonder if the msrp really is $795

hyperRevue 11-01-05 08:36 PM

Personally I think the msrp is total bullsh*t.
Just trying to increase sales by making people think they're getting an amazing deal.

The fork rake is roughly 28mm, by the way.

griffin_ 11-01-05 08:44 PM

that is the msrp on the windsor wesite though

hyperRevue 11-01-05 10:06 PM

I know.
I just can't fathom anyone actually charging that much for one of those.
In fact, can you even buy one of those from anywhere other than ebay?
