Hey all. I just picked up a sweet 76 Schwinn Paramount Track bike. This thing is awesome, but the guy just threw some cheapo road bars on it for me. I want some bullhorns, but I'd like to see some examples before I order. I know there are a lot of variations, and I'd like one that's right for me. Please include pic, brand, model, and where you ordered from. East coast vendor preferred, but not mandatory. Thanks in advance!

generic alloy bullhorn bar - $12

first and only bullhorn experience, and it was what i wanted. i chopped 1.5" off the ends as suggested by griffin_. he said they were a bit flexy when you were out all the way, and i figured i didn't need all the length anyways. can't beat the price, and i have no complaints.

click on the picture of the grey bike below (first from left). Those are the mavic bullhorns which I was lucky enough to snag off ebay for a measly 25 dollars (looked like they had hardly been used). They have a pretty extreme drop and some funny hand positions on some sections but they are comfy, nice and long and they just look so sexy. Also, for being long alloy bars, I can really barely feel any flex at all, even when I'm pulling really hard on them (which I hear is a common bullhorn problem). Good luck finding a set though, it took me like a year. I hear the syntace stratos bars are quite similar though, and cheap.

EDIT: ooooh, looks like its your lucky day, and there happens to be a set of the mavic bullhorns on ebay, currently sitting at 1 dollar with 5 days to go. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=%207194854899

Flip and chop the cheapo road bars.

queerpunk 11-07-05 09:24 AM

i found that my flop-n-chops were comfier than my syntace bullhorns. the curve of the flop-n-chops were really comfortable for my hands, whereas the syntace ones were flat on the horn part, with a slight bend upwards, that was too far for me to reach for comfortably anyway. maybe those big-arse nitto ones would be comfy, but they're huge, and i don't want to reach that far.

DerekRI 11-07-05 10:50 AM

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep 'em coming!

I have a set of flop and chops, and they are definitely comfortable, but I'd like to try something different on this bike. I'd like to get a closer look at some of the different nitto bullhorns, but finding them is a little tricky.

most bullhorns are too long.

flip n chop

I am running Nitto bullhorns and really like them. They are very comfortable and allow for multiple hand positions. I should note that I do a lot of rides on them, not just commuting, and like to be able to either stretch out or sit up. I could see however, cutting down the flipped up end part of the bar for a slicker look.

DerekRI 11-07-05 11:55 AM

Thanks plantdude, what model nittos are those, and where'd you get em?

Here's a pic of my bike... I just feel this bike deserves more than a flip/chop :)

EDIT: And yes, those pedals are temporary also ;)

hyperRevue 11-07-05 12:03 PM

Beautiful bike.

DerekRI, sweet ride. The Nitto bars I am running are the Model 019 Bullhorn bars (http://www.businesscycles.com/graphics/nittobull19.jpg). Business Cycles has them online (http://www.businesscycles.com/tbars-nitto.htm), but I got mine from Montano Velo here in Oakland.

Post more pics when it's finished.

DerekRI 11-08-05 12:36 AM

I'll definitely post some more stuff once parts come in! Thanks for the compliments!

Corcis 11-09-05 02:15 AM

Does anyone have experience with both styles? Last two on this page are what I am talking about: the 018s seem to go out and bend forward at a more extreme angle, whereas the 019s curve and form. The 019s look like they would have a lower ride than the 018s, but I haven't ridden bullhorns, so I wouldn't know how they feel.

noriel 11-09-05 09:20 AM

I had some nittos similar to the 18's for a couploe of months, before wrecking them. They were nice, I put some profile-like mtb grips on the flats. The ends of the bar felt pretty long, but the 019's look a little longer. My nitto's were the time trial bars at 42 cm. I have the 019's en route to my place today. I'll give some feedback when I get them in. I am however, really looking at the syntace stratos bars with the 80mm drop. Does anyone know what the drops are for the Chucksbikes syntace bars? After using my stock ergo drop bars that came with my fuji, I don't feel the same annoyance with them. I mean, I miss the horns when it's time for some cranking, but the drops are nice for my longer rides when I have to deal with wind. I'll post a pic with my bike equipped with the Nitto time trial horns.

Got my Syntace bars today from Chucks. They are 2cm in drop. I would have loved to have gotten Syntace bars with the 4cm drop and 38cm width, but for $14, I can't complain. These go for $30 on ebay.

delay 11-16-05 02:34 PM

Here is a picture of my bike with the Nitto 018s. Personally I love them. I don't really like/ need a drop.

Which color bars did you get, silver or black? Here's a pic of my bike with the 019's mounted and my wreck bent 018's. The 018's are flat enough to put the mtb grips on. I just decided to double wrap the flat part before the drop on the 019's. Sorry for the bad pics, I still shoot film, and my only digital is my cell phone.

So, here's the 019's

And here's the 018's and 019's. None of the bars have been cut.

I got the silver syntaces from chucksbikes {http://www.chucksbikes.com/store/indexbr001s.htm} and really like them, although they're my first set of bullhorns. They're really stiff, and the extra length makes it a lot easier to climb hills without beating up your back (which was my problem with drops). For $12.50, you can't beat it... I got a set of the Tekro levers as well, and the whole deal was >$40 delivered.

Mine are black. I would have gotten silver cause he has them in 38cm, but, the silver syntace bars are not like standard polished alluminum or chromed steel bars. They have this textured silver enamel sprayed on them that looks plastic-like. ew.

DerekRI 11-17-05 12:33 AM

I actually went with the black syntace from chucks for my bike. They look good, and feel even better. Very happy with them so far. And contrary to what I heard from many people, I find them much more comfy than my chop/flops.

Those don't looke like 018s
