rear hub loosing

i just resently (this weekend) changed the rear axle on my fixie. I am using the origanal cones on the new axle. Sat. when I changed the axles I tightened the cones against the bearing and than put in the spacers followed by the "lock" washers and tighten them down again the spacers/cones. There was no play in the bearing this morning. I had a rear flat today, changed tubes (did not check bearing) and continued on. This evening I noticed the bearing were loose.
Did I just not tighten it enough? Does back pedalling loosing the cones? Does the pressure from axle bolts cause the rear cones to loosing?

How did you tighten the wheel on?
Did you wrench one side super tight then tighten the other side?
Because that can cause the cones to loosen.

this happens to my hub all of the time. i have to re-tighten it every 4 days or so..it's not a huge deal but there starts to be a little bit of a wobble.

I tighten the non-drive side and slide the drive side to the chain tightness I desire, than loose the non-drive side to center the wheel and than retighten the non-drive side

Is there a better why to tighten my rear wheel?

hey - before you "burn down the building", please go back to school and learn how to speak. rear hub loosing? huh?

um yeah, and if you could, go ahead and move your desk down to storage room B. um, yeah... thanks.

I am just trying to be nice... I just had one of those days at work with my boss told me to apologize to a co-worker b/c I called her lazy... than I pick-up half a beer bottle in my tire on the way home... than I get home and see that my axle is loose... it is just one of those days...

The bearing cones should hold their setting for hundreds if not thousands of miles. Lots of ordinary people neglect these things all the time and go on riding for years w/o problems. Fix gear or free wheeling have no affect on the cones. How are you setting the cone against the lock/jam nut? They have to press against each other pretty hard (esp with the short handle cone wrenches) to keep their setting.

i've had that problem a couple of times. i think it just is caused by not tightening it down quite enough. could depend on the hub, maybe?

I make it a habit to check my **** now whenever I take my tire off. I hate that rattling!

it can indeed be quite tricky to manage to get the cone tightened against the lock nut enough for it not to loosen and still have the cone against the bearings without any play. actually, it's a total ****ing ***** sometimes.. ugg

I had this problem on my suzue jr before I changed out the axel to a much better one. I would get the cones dead on and crank down the wheel and the there would be play. Take the wheel out to tighten and it was perfect. I thought I was loosing it for a while.

if you're doing everything right it shouldn't come loose that quickly. you really have to get that locknut tight on the spacers. otherwise, just take a look at the nut and see if something happened to the threads.
