Eggbeater total failure?
 

So I'll get the pics up tomorrow, but here's the deal... My right pedal just went BOOM. The pedal part just slipped off of the spindle as I was going around a corner, sticking to my cleat.

It looks like a lot of small parts disintegrated at the end of the pedal where you inject the grease. I have less than 2000 miles on these pedals, and I'm not too happy right now. They are the cheaper chromo pedals, but still, I think I paid 75-100 bucks for them. I have a pair of mallets that I'm going to throw on tomorrow morning before work, then look for something else.

Since Friday, I'd noticed a little clicking from the right pedal. Today when I got to work, it had been pretty bad on the way in. I checked, and the pedal was moving about 1/16-1/8" on the spindle. I thought it would get me home. Stopped at the Local to see what my sister's plans for Thanksgiving were, and saw people outside checking out my bike while I was smoking.

Random Guy : "See - those are eggbeaters..."

Me : "Yeah, but I think the right one is broken... It's making clicking noises and moving a little. It should hold awhile. They're good pedals."

I so should not have said that. I rode home on a spindle. I'm not to happy about this.

Anyone else have their eggbeaters just fall apart?

i dont understand, youre pissed because it made a bunch of noise and you could feel and see movement, and then it broke?

i've had some side to side play in my eggbeaters for a while now. they haven't exploded.
sounds like the retaining nut on the end worked itself loose.

not that this means a whole hell of a lot, but i've heard two other accounts of this happening to people. when i was toying with the idea of getting a clipless setup, a friend of mine told me that he had a pedal blast off of the spindle. i then mentioned it to someone else who said that they had a similar problem but noticed that the nut had come loose while lubing their chain before a ride. i am not too familiar with the pedals from personal experience, but it seems like it might be a good idea to inspect them periodically and make sure that the retaining nut or whatnot is secure.

No, I'm pissed because it broke after less than 2000 miles. It's been maybe 20 since it started making noise, and I wasn't sure if it was the cleat or the pedal for the first part of that. I didn't know until today if it happened with both shoes that I wear. I didn't see movement until about 12 hours ago, and wasn't sure if it was the cleat (they always feel a little loose, so I couldn't tell it was the pedal) until I got to work today.

There's no nut at the end of either of them, just a port for grease. The nut inside is two different threaded rings that aren't accesible. It kind of looks like they're held in place by a kind of ring that lets the grease in...

I looked at the box that they came in, and I guess it was only $66, but still, that doesn't seem right. I don't have a receipt or anything anymore, but I'm pretty sure that I picked them up in Feb or Mar. I'm not sure I'd actually want the warranty now. I think I'm just going to look for a different clippless system. I've already gone through several pairs of cleats on the CrankBros system, mainly because I was pulling out when skidding. I'm not going to trust it brakeless anymore.

The end cap actually prevents the body from moving back and forth, you have to make sure that is on tight. The end caps mine came with were ****ty and they stripped apart so I emailed them and they sent me some better ones along with some extra bearings. And you do have the end caps on right? They screw into the grease port.

The nut inside the cap is accessible but you have to use a socket wrench set.

Hmmm... Looking at the other pedal, there is a bolt when you remove the cap. I don't know if this fell off whe the pedal came apart, or if it was at some other point... When I went to look at the part of the pedal that was stuck to my shoe, the cap was still on tight, but it was dark, and I was looking at it under a streetlight as I pulled it apart...

Still doesn't make me happy.

that sounds wrong. there should be some sort of nylock nut, or a allen head bolt or something. then again, the design has changed a couple of times.

anyway, CB won't ask you for a receipt.
i got my beaters back in february and emailed them in the summer about the play in my pedals. The email exchange went something like this:
"i have play in my 6 month old pedals, what do i do?"
"what's your address, well send you some bearings"
"woot"

mine fell apart in the exact some way. it was about a year ago. I got fed up and bought new pedals

I'd still warranty them and e-bay them to offset the costs of new pedals, but that's just me.

i'm sort of glad i sopld my eggbeaters when they were still pretty much new... :D
It sounds very much like the nut that holds the bearing and thus the pedal body on the spinldle worked itself loose, and then, when the pedal slipped off, it fell out. If I had 'beaters, I'd tighten the ****er down right now and check it if there's any hint of play in the pedal.

it happend to me too. I sent them the broken one and they sent me a new one.

As soon as eggbeaters begin to develop more than just 'slight' play it is time for a rebuild kit. I have never had the total failure that you have had but have rebuilt all three sets of EB pedals on my mountain rigs with rebuild kits provided free from CB.

There is definately a nut at the end of the pedal holding things together. If your pedal had significant play, I would have checked this out before riding any further.

As far as CB customer service goes, like other have said, it is the best I have ever come accross in any company for any product at any time. period. definately warranty them. It will be no hassle

Of the three Eggbeater pedals I have, 2 are stainless version and one is chrome. One of the stainless versions is from 2002 and the pedal looks like it was just built better with better material than the newer versions I picked up (04 and 05 I think). Anyway, I haven't experienced the failure that some of you have had, but I am always on the lookout for excessive play developing and try and nip it in the bud.

Two sets of EB's here - Candy stainless and regular chrome. No issues with the Candy's (some play developed when the bike fell over once, I just tightened down that outer cap).

The Chrome ones developed some play and I opened up the cap, made sure the locknut was tight then tightened down the outer cap. I periodically check the outer cap for looseness.

Bikesdirect on eBay sells eggbeaters at ridiculoously cheap prices, even for the Ti ones. Check them. I bought my Candy's for $50, $60 shipped. The Triple or Double Ti's were 130?

i've mosty only heard stories of the chrome ones failing or at least starting to feel like garbage. you get what you pay for i guess. however, xcutterx just had a set of the magnesium mallets have one of the tension springs sort of pop out of place.

i have three pairs of eggbeaters. the candy sl's are my newest and least ridden, and my single ti's i've had for just over a year.

i also have the older ss ones. i've had these for well over three years and bought them used. one developed play once; so i pulled the rubber endcap out, lubed everything, and tighted it all up. haven't had a problem since. these pedals are my transient pedals in that they get ridden on fixies, as well as on my mountain bikes. they get a lot of abuse and still are holding up super well.

when you parts speak, listen to them.

I have the chrome ones and now and have some slight movement in them. Nothing serious, but I will have to give them a good look over when I get home. I now wonder if this is a defect on this model. :eek:

You just need a rebuild kit. They include new nuts and everything. I'm not a huge fan of them really. I think TIME has a better a little better system. We rebuilt (under protest from me) a set of eggbeaters yesterday that had wear in the parts where the springs contact the little "egg beater" parts. They had lots of play in them, seemed kinda scary to me.

I loved my eggbeater cromo's for a couple years. When it came time to rebuild though, I was surprised that they only feature one really small sealed bearing on the outside near the endcap, and rely on a plastic bushing inboard. You have to be diligent about greasing these pedals.

After my rebuild the bearing on the right pedal began clicking after a few hundred miles - sounds so much like a loose BB. Anyway, After the clicking got worse I ordered some cheap shimano knock-offs from Nashbar, just to see how long they last. I'm guessing they'll go at least as long as the eggbeaters, albeit with a weight penalty.

If I were going to invest in high-dollar pedals again, I would consider a set of Speedplay Frog's instead. I've seen an illustration that shows they have needle bearings inboard, in addition to the sealed roller bearings outboard.

This also happened to me once with my right pedal and I had to ride a few miles home with one leg, apparently the bolt came loose that secures the beater to the spindle. I still like eggbeaters and have even brought a second pair for a new bike, but I’m now careful to check the tension on the locknut every other month or so when I grease the pedals.

Well, somehow I got my Mallets back on in time to get to work today. Such a difference with the platform. From reading the testimonials on here, I'm going to try to warranty them - I'll post here when I hear back from CrankBros...

I have a pair of the original eggbeaters on my mountain bike. I've never done any maintenance on them and they are still going strong. I have Candy SL pedals on my fixed gear bike and my cyclocross bike. No problems there either. It is the nature of mechanical devices that they sometimes break or that nuts come loose once in awhile.

Hey, how do you get the plastic end caps off? I've got the cheap ones, and just now went to check and make sure everything was looking okay, and the plastic's real soft--the screwdriver's just tearing through it. Ugh.

If I call them, will they send me metal ones?

Just buck up and get some ATAC's already!

Yup, I love ATACs. I like to ride with regular shoes for beer runs and stuff and those egg beaters wouldn't really work for that. I have regular ATACs on most of my bikes, but the Time Zs are the bomb on my SS

as far as hearsay, i've heard a few people complain about eggbeaters
personally, my eggbeaters SS have worked perfectly

time pedals, though, never heard a complaint
