I'm guessing the indignation in the OP's tone comes from the fact that the cop was a ******bag about the whole thing, when he could've just been like "red light. that's a ticket." We've all been stuck with overpriced tickets for blowing red lights, and no, it ain't fun to have to pay them. But if we get caught, it's the price we pay. I guess I get a ticket for every 2000 lights I run...who knows? Hell, at that rate, it'd probably be once a month..... All's I know is that if you're going to run from the cops, you better make sure you're going to get away! One time, I tried to outrun them, and I ended up with 4 tickets instead of 1, or perhaps even none, and a stern warning (as the cop indicated was all he wanted to do, before he had to chase me down). (Happy ending to that story: cop never showed up to trial & I never had to pay the tickets :) ).

Anyway, I'm not gonna jump down your throat, tombo. Bike tickets are outrageous. But it's just a fact of life. Until we change it......

still, cops tend to be a little dull, power-hungry, and fat.
i'm pissed i need to pay $60 for not having a reflector on my bike at lunchtime. I think you're full of it you guys who talk about knowingly breaking some law and biting the consequences... Cops are being petty and grossly misinterpreting some of these rules...every old lady is riding around out there on a cruiser without reflectors.

that's why I carry a nine and dust pigs that try to give me tickets

I ran through a red light with a police car waiting in the opposite direction going down 5th avenue in brooklyn tonight.
Weird part was, I had my 13 watts of HID blazing away up front and I didn't even notice the cop on the other side of the red light looking at me till I was through the intersection. I just hauled ass, hoping he'd be too lazy to make the u-turn...

I tend to agree with teiaperigosa though. I mean, if you're cruising through a light, a bike cop or patrol officer might come after you but if you fly through it at 30mph, it'll probably be over before they put down the doughnut to come after you.

Kinda like the lion and the zebras, they only go after the faster ones if there aren't any slow ones around. Make like you didn't see em and give em a run for the money.

tombo 11-15-05 12:02 AM

thats usually what i do...but i wasnt drinking today so i didnt have that extra bit of nerve in me. Someone stole my flask so i've been a bit high and dry. soon enough though, soon enough.

tombo 11-15-05 12:03 AM

...and the funny thing is that they dont tend to care about me running lights or anything in any other part of town. In and around the college is the only place that really matters to the good old Portland PD.

sentinel 11-15-05 04:53 AM

Funny, some of you sure have a low opinion of the police, but would probably not hesitate to demand one if you needed one. Now that's "typical"

MLPROJECT 11-15-05 05:11 AM

i had the same **** happen... got pulled over for running a stop sign and right afterwards a group of 6 roadie dudes rolled through it and another up the road. he let us go after that.

highpants 11-15-05 07:41 AM

tombo - i'm sorry you got a ticket. i'm also sorry that i couldn't have warned you about how much judgement would be passed on you by posters to this forum.

then there's the other side, the "fuk the cops" crowd. unfortunately, things are seldom that simple, so cut and dry.

i've had good run-ins with cops. they aren't all evil. that said, if i got a ticket for something stupid like running a light, i'd reserve the right to be upset about it. leave the man alone.

my last run-in with bad nyc cops was when they cought up to me after i run 5 red lights on fifth ave. they told me it is a very dangerous think to do, and that i could t-bone a car. i nodded my head and replied :it may look dengerous sirs but believe me, i'm a proffesional cyclist and i know what i'm doing :D
they left without saying anything else.

Aeroplane 11-15-05 08:01 AM

Blah blah blah, you broke the law and got a ticket.

As far as I know, the officer does NOT have to give you his name, but if you ask for his badge number, he is required to give you that. This is to prevent personal vendettas and forces you to take appropriate action for bad police work: filing a complaint.

Hey, for what it's worth, you've given me a heads-up for my upcoming visit, which is the only worthwhile aspect of this thread, as far as I can tell. I owe you a beer.

FixednotBroken 11-15-05 01:27 PM

we've all had our share of run-ins with cops. anyone who says "all cops are dicks", is just wrong. they're just people, and while there might be a higher ratio of as$holes to nice guys, pre-judging them is stupid. and if you think there aren't some serious ******lips (thanks shants) on bikes, think again.

sentinel's right: with that attitude, if you ever want some help from the police, you'd better ask nicely...
