Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Quick question, if anyone know off the top of their head. In light of the above discussion roughly how much does it cost bringing your bike with you as excess luggage flying from Canada to the US? Just curious, hence can't be asked to google or check with airlines.

You prompted me to check since I am flying both this month and next, and was planning on bringing a frame home with me next month. United charges $200, Porter airlines charges $25 each way.

Porter is an awesome airline, for more reasons than simply shipping bikes.

Just stretch and warm up properly before take off or your arms will get cramp from all that flapping

Last time I took my bike on a trip it was $100 each way (with Air Canada)

Yeah uggo for sure, but cheap and gets the job done. If you find one, in 130mm please post it up.

You'll be hard pressed finding something cheaper than the origin8 offering

Orgin8 makes some really crap products. But they make some solid midlevel products too. Their stems fall in the later category.

Origin 8 doesn't make anything, they just put their branding on existing parts.

So is the Origin 8 stem in the link a re-branded 3T?

No. It's a re-branded knockoff of the 3T stem made in China.

what about their frames?

another question for the thread.. does anyone have an opinions on the giant bowery? I haven't heard it mentioned much and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the money.

oops I meant to add this https://tallahassee.craigslist.org/bik/4075486359.html

Looks like a good deal. The Bowery is basically Giant's Langster.

Buying a new headset for the winter bike build. Should I go with the basic Tange Levin, or spring an extra $12 for the Velo Orange Sealed Bearing set. Having munched through a bunch of headset bearings on my previous winter bike, but seen the sealed cartridge wheel bearings last pretty much forever (I replaced them after 4 winters, but they didn't need it) I'm inclined to go for the sealed bearing headset.

Have a Steamroller which came with a gear ratio of 44t/19t. Have been going at it for a couple of months, but I find to "easy" to pedal (does that make me want a higher or lower gear?).
I'm looking at getting a new chainring from VeloSolo, but wondering how much an addional couple of teeth makes. Would a 47t be too much of an increase?

Find a calculator and think in gear inches instead of gear ratios. With 700x28 tires 44/19 is a little more than 60 gear inches, small unless you have some brutal climbing to do. A 47t will put you up to about 66 gi which is what I use for city riding. A lot of bikes have a stock setup around 72-78 gi which stronger riders may prefer. Bigger gears can go faster but are less responsive.
