Right on, most people don't have that tool.

50voltphantom 02-28-17 12:39 PM

^ACS, White Industries, Shimano, fits all of them.

the sci guy 02-28-17 01:30 PM

hooray i did something right

only downside it's not deep enough to fit over the cone nuts on the axle.

thanks guys - I'll take a look at what's available on amazon and not worry about it!

before I pull the trigger on the soma highway 1 bar on Retrogression - are there any other drop bars with a slight flare, like the salsa cowbell? It needs to be silver, and a 26.0 clamp.

The closest is the Salsa Bell Lap. Flared and 26.0, but only black, and out of production.

ugh had those on my Cross Check a few years ago - hate the ergo bend.

there's gotta be other brands that make a flare

Nitto makes a bunch but the reach and drop are much larger than the Somas.

cool thanks - I'll do some looking around

velofinds 03-03-17 01:59 PM

Casually began searching for an economical 1" threadless headset (i.e., no budget-busting Cane Creek 110 or Chris King NoThreadset). Have provisionally identified the Cane Creek 40 and the FSA Orbital X as suitable candidates. Questions:

- Is one preferable to the other?
- Am I overlooking any other viable options?

Headset must be black and in a similar price range (~ +/- $10). Also don't want to put anything Origin8-branded on my bike, so no need to dredge up that name :) Thanks!

jtbadge 03-03-17 02:14 PM

Can't speak for 1" specifically, but the Cane Creek 40 might be the best value in a threadless headset. Just a solid quality product without the bling factor.

I have one on my Log Lady. Would buy again.

Scrodzilla 03-03-17 04:10 PM

IRD Techno Glide is excellent too.

the sci guy 03-04-17 10:58 PM

As i mentioned above I am replacing the pursuit horns with the Soma bar I ordered from Scrod this week, and subsequently need to put some levers/hoods.
But I can't decide on if I should get just black hoods w/ silver levers, or if the bike will look good with a brown/gum hood and silver levers.
Here's the bike again:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8851/2...e794c7_c_d.jpg

IMagine it with the drop bars, and the new levers on it - would the brown look good? Or should I just go black. If it matters, the cable housing will also now be white. Also my preference for bar tape is usually orange, yellow, or a bright green.
the brown levers I was considering is the cane creek src5 ones.

In the future I am ditching the deep silver wheels and going back to normal rims and possible a gumwall tire.

Lemme know what y'all think!

Broctoon 03-05-17 12:39 AM

The Cane Creek SCR-5 are great levers. I had some on my road bike and love them.

But don't get brown hoods. Get black. At least that's what I think.

velofinds 03-06-17 10:37 AM

First of all, the hoods are gum-colored, not brown :p

I think it will look good either way and certainly be an improvement over what you have on it now. So, good on you for making those changes. Gum hoods, gumwall tires, and standard box section rims will certainly give the bike more of a retro vibe (not a bad thing) if that's what you want. At that point you may also want to think about a brown saddle. So I think it will come down to whether you're going for a more retro or more modern look.

Here's some inspiration for you. This is a geared bike, obviously, and not the same model as your bike, but it should give you some idea.

i ended up going with the black ones because of the colors i use for bar tape - i couldn't see bright orange, yellow, or lime green going well with brown/gum hoods.

velofinds 03-06-17 12:29 PM

Sounds like you made the right call. Fluro anything would definitely not go with gum hoods.

I need cheap stems to dial in fit before I spend money on something nice.

1 1/8 steerer, 31.8 bar, 100/110/120 and maybe even a 130.

Is there such a thing as a stem with adjustable length? Does anyone know a source besides craigslist for really cheap stems?

SevenOneEight 03-07-17 03:20 PM

I would check LBS. They might have a stash of cheap stems they take off when the sell/fit new bikes.
Also, I did a quick ebay search and there are a number of stems with 1 day left in the auction at 99 cents.($5.00 shipping)

Not cheap, or easy to find, but if you're not time-crunched (or budget-constrained), I would look into a LOOK Ergostem if I were you:

The good news is that there is probably enough of a market for these things that you could (again, probably) recoup most of the cost once you know you're dialed.

Black or silver brakes?

hard to say - IMO components should all match - stem, brakes, levers, crank. you've got mostly black but a silver crank. throws the whole thing off. dogs & cats living together! mass hysteria!

but i'll say silver

also no camo tape.

Both of my wheel sets have silver hubs which makes black cranks look weird IMO. I'm leaning toward silver brakes as well. I was playing around with the camo tape. It'll probably be black. :thumb:

make it orange to match your seat clamp and to play off the green. black is the worst color besides white. and camo.
and black is neutral so your black components will go with the orange tape too...

Current plan is an orange stem cap. An orange headset would've been cool but I'm not budgeting $150 for a headset on this build. Orange tape might be cool though.

Stick to camo and orange: https://www.retro-gression.com/produ...handlebar-tape

Wish it didn't have the Cinelli logo though.

Easy to remedy with this and some orange plugs.

I'd say silver brakes though. And this will be probably my third post in a row, but...... gumwalls.
