Here's a random thought:

How much of the Keirin influnce is just simply shorter people looking for a quality lugged steel ride? Personally, almost every Keirin frame that I've seen was way too small for me, so maybe that's part of it?

Just trying to get back on topic, somewhat...

dubteka 12-02-05 01:23 AM

i just picked up a 56cm Samson!... so as to influence... since the bigger sizes are rare, next to the fact that keirin frames are rare as it is, just makes them hot property.

HereNT 12-02-05 01:35 AM

I know! Where am I going to find a 58cm Keirin frame with a 56cm top tube? So I went Italian, but that's still 58/58, I think....

That's an interesting point.

RoboTech and Transformers were a little after my time, but I was big into Shogun Warriors and G-Force/Battle of the Planets. The idea of 5 NJS bikes that come together to make a super robot or a transmuting spaceship hold particular appeal for me. Now THAT would be cool.

Ritchey's red compound WCS tires are awesome in the snow!

Where can I get a decal made with my name on it (like e-Richie's got on his Nagasawa, which is probably painted)?

go to a shop that make decals for motorcycles.

I got my name on my UNO on the down tube.

If you want, let me know and my cousin makes them also. ( sponsored his AMA ride til he crashed before his first race)

It's not the Bike that makes the rider.

Ie. people can spend as much as they wish on comonents and frames if they're not willing give it there all while riding. Whats the point. To look cool?

sohi 12-02-05 12:06 PM

wow.. the finish on the nagasawa is not as nice as I would have expected for the price.

that's odd.
i think of the frame as the sum total of his nearly 40 years in the trade.
to wit, i think it's perfect. wabi-sabi, and all that! at the end of the day,
anybody could look at anything handmade and say, "foul". what is the point
of that? try to understand the history of the builder's line and i suspect you'll
look deeper than the paint layer.

that's what i mean...
it's not about just the paint, or just
the lug edge, or just the tube guage...

Agreed. A bike built by a human, even a human with decades and decades of experience, should still 'feel' like it was built by a human, not a line of angry robots.

I think thats what a track bike is all about... the gestalt of it is the important thing and what draws me to it.

I dunno, I've never ridden one.

(I'm not sure I'd call ultra-clean bikes crap, but they're not my thing, personally. I like to see traces of human imperfection in my handbuilt things.)

The quest for perfection never realized vs. the soulless march toward six-sigma quality assurance standards.

Best summed up with my e-RICHIE t-shirt that proudly states "imperfection is perfection"
