my pants fought the chainring and the chainring won

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

my pants fought the chainring and the chainring won

while i was riding to work today, i noticed that my right pant leg was unrolling. since i was about a block from work, i figured i'd be ok.

wrong.

part of the rolled up cuff got caught between the chainring and the chain, and damn near pulled my pants off. while i wouldn't mind learning how to do this on dates, it took me a bit to wrestle my pants out while spectators looked on.

on the downside, it tore my pantleg up to about mid calf. however, now i have a nice pair of bike friendly cutoffs to wear, so i'm going to assume that it was meant to be.

if you want to learn that trick for dates, it might work better if you learn how to get your date's pants caught in your chainring.

If I were wearing a white belt, catching my pantleg wouldn't have been an issue.

1) because i would have been wearing tight women's pants

2) because i could have had a myspace pity party

the best thing that can be said for getting your pants caught in a chainring: it makes a pretty wicked sound.

my favorite part of your post was the CLASSIC: "I only had one block left so I thought it would be okay." I have often told myself the same thing for many a varied dilemma while biking. I've found you have about 50/50 chance of being right.

you guys should all be wearing tight pants anyway... then you would be having zero problems. even 501 levis are tight enough and those are ultra baggy to me

I did the same thing on a run to the grocery store a few weeks back, except i ran a stop sign, pants caught in ring and locked up wheel as i sprinted through the intersection.... it led to hardcore power slide through the intersection inbetween oncomming cars. Somehow I managed to stay on the bike and after a revolution my pants were spit out the bottom and i straightened the bike out and rode away all without stopping....you should have seen the look at the driver waiting at the stop sign.

what about the pogues with joe strummer?

yeah, that didn't help make it any better, either. the bobby fuller four version is the only one that's worth it.
