Does anyone have a copy of this they might be willing to part with?

oh and does he run a blog or anything these days?

I have no copies left. Mayo still writes a little. I was recently made aware of his latest piece (see link in my sig - I reposted it there).

his writing sucks, avoid it.

I would like a chance to read it as well. If anyone has an extra please PM.

I thought, what should I say to this Shants person, who I didn't know until today, that says my writing sucks and that people should avoid it. I played it out in my head. I’d try to be witty and piercing, saying, essentially, do it better yourself, or ya, what do you know about it, then he’d come back trying to be educated and superior with lots of references with statements like, when are you going to get over your amateurish Kerouac impersonation, or I’ve read Burroughs and you Mr. Mayonnaise are no Burroughs, or don’t take your failed Hunter Thompson fetish out on us.

It would go back and forth a few times: I’d post my witticism and what for the response, post again. No one really wining, both of us hiding behind the computer screen pretending something we’re not, saying things we’d never say in public. What’s the point? I’ll keep it simple. Shants, let it be known I disagree with you.

And as for you Mr. 165. Thanks for all your help along the way. Like I said to Karstens the other day, if I die tomorrow I want you to know I appreciate what you’ve done for me. There has been a pattern in my life that gets repeated over and over. Being a geek, I’ve learned to make friends with the Cool kids which by association, makes me cool. You are what I am not: Cool.

No, I don’t have a blog, I am out of copies, the “stories” and their responses can be found on this forum. Yellow Jersey in Madison has copies for sale, at least he did a month ago.

if you get a chance, it is a really good dozen-or-so pages

mayo has such amazing style in his writing
i find his love of the sport truthful and raw
while at the same time his elitism exposes his (at times comical) abrasive nature
in short he's a jerk on bike with some good stuff to say.

in these stories, he is the ultra-cool, toughguy, stereotypical "anti-hipster"
but it comes off a little too bad ass, as if its an affectation of an imaginary lifestyle
which then makes you wonder why he wrote this in the first place.

now i'm not sure who sent it to me,
but I seem to remember that there was a whole "keep it on the DL" vibe about the transaction - almost as if it wasn't intended for mass circulation.

I didn’t intend for a hush hush type of distribution. I gave away the copies to anyone I could find until I ran out.

Am I a jerk on the bike? Yes, sometimes I am, sometimes not. The cars make me this way. But, I do take pleasure in crushing arrogant (yes, presumed arrogant) lycra roadies on my fixed gear. I like the idea of seeing if I can win a battle with one hand tied behind my back. I lose a lot, I just don’t write about it. That being said, I am also an arrogant Lycra half the time. It’s a contradiction, I know. Affectation? Yes, at times that’s true. I try to imagine myself the archetype fixed gear city rider. At the same time there is a strong Rock soundtrack to each piece. A stylized response to a particular song I’ve been listening to, adding to a feeling of affectation. In many cases the time spent reading is the same length of the song. Songs are usually chosen for purity of mood, oftentimes aggression (except for today, today is a Cocteau Twins day). This comes from years spent as a left of the dial deejay in Boulder. I like cycling and writing about cycling because it’s an acceptable outlet for anger, aggression, competition, stress: I can’t tell the boss to kiss off but I can charge on my pedals imagining I’m trying to cause his heart to explode.

at other times it's pure beauty. Pure zen, which, if you don't know, is much harder to write.

This is a fantastic idea. I will try this out later.

A few people didn't pay, and thus didn't get a book. Which honestly, was fine. There were times when things are busy, and you can't get things done in time. You missed an interesting book, but you've been around here for a stretch of time, so you know the stories and the responses they get.

I have ONE copy of the book. But it's the one that Mayo signed for me. If it's VERY important to anyone to get a copy, let me know.

oh well , i am still reading the books u sent. i'm happy.

Hmmmm, first of all I never asked for critique of his writing. I am fully aware of his attitude on paper and screen and how it polarizes anyone on this forum who has been here for a while. Some of us love, some of us hate. Shants, last time I checked, I'm a big boy with a mind of my own that can make decisions. In other words Shants, shut up.
