I need glove help (NYC centric)
 

My roommate borrowed and lost my winter riding gloves. Now I'm totally sh|tf\/cked.

I need some super-awesome winter gloves that will keep me warm and dry no matter how cold it gets. I need to be able to hold a pen and write in my manifest. I need them to cost less than $30. And I need to buy them in New York, soon.

What's the deal with neoprene gloves? Seems like they're cheap, warm, thin and waterproof. Any downside?

What about mittens that convert into fingerless gloves? Would a wool pair of mittens keep me toasty warm?

Any other recommendations?

I've come to love my Gore Windstopper Fleece gloves that I picked up at EMS for $25. I've ridden them in the rain, and during really cold days and they've worked out nicely. The best thing is how they wick the sweat off of my hands - I think that's half the battle.

That said, I'm probably going to pick up a liner for single digit weather. Good gloves for the northeast all the same.

You and me both boots. Got sh*tcanned last night at a show and lost my babies. It was the wool half/mitten things that were more sewn together than they shoulda been. Great and cheap though. $6 but that's in maine.

Careful with those, they don't breathe at all, and make your hands sweat profusely. And after a while they will smell like dead animals. That was my experience at least.

army surplus all the way. wool fingerless gloves, $5 or less, almost all surplus spots have them, last couple I bought were from that place on Houston near Allen and the one on 8th St. On top of that right now are these crazy trigger finger mittens: http://www.silverstarsurplus.com/trigger_mittens.html $5 from that link plus $5 shipping. Not sure if they are in the NY stores or not. Riding down Canal the other day someone shouted, "hey he's wearing my gloves", so maybe they are around. Not sure about using them for messenger work though, you can write with them on, but unlocking is sort of a *****. they are easy to take off too, but big and annoying as soon as you do.

Last winter I used some mittens that sound exactly like sers'. Only problem is I lost them and EMS apparently decided not to make them this year..

ditto on gloves from EMS -- good quality, affordable. mine are shelled and have reinforced fingers but not too bulky -- yeehaw!

i use a smartwool liner glove under a fleece mit when it REALLY cold.

if it is above 25 just the fleece mits. mits are awesome for keping your hands warm and could be easily removed if/when you need to write.

no matter what glove i wear below about 25 my digits eventually start gettin cold. not a problem with mits.

specialized subzero. more expensive. more awesome: windproof, waterproof, removable liner, good sticky grip. i like mine lots.

i tried on some windstopper gloves the other day, but with them being fleece, they'll hold moisture from the outside, right? how are the grip on those? EMS **** is ultra nice, so i might get those if they don't have the soak factor

i definitely need some gloves and want them as low profile as possible, windproof, and with a good grip since i ride naked bars (although this might have to change). everything i've been looking at seems like it'd be slick on the chrome bars.

i haven't ridden with them in heavy rain. i've ridden through rain with them on several occasions, though. even holding while wet handlebars my hands stayed bone dry.

they've actually changed the grip from a full leather palm to a synthetic grip on the palms and at the joints of the fingers. i've never had a problem with grip. it's worth noting that they allow enough dexterity for me to dig out my keys and lock my house / bike and almost everything else I need to do out in the cold.

unless it's heavy rain or low single digit temps, i'd say these gloves are a good bet.

Get some snowboarding mitts. They are durable, weatherproof, and very breathable. Usually available for $20-$30.

i have some older burton tactic mits that i ride with, but they're so huge and bulky... the only plus is how they go almost to my elbow.. aka no wind up the sleeves

the burton mitt I use in 'extreme' weather isn't so bulky and keep me bone dry and warm. It's got a fingered liner inside and the best feature is the snot rag!
