Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

(and 46x17's post pretty much covered it regarding the scene in sfo).

the one thing that's a little weird here is how fractured it is; it's like each social group/tribe/whatever has a crew who rides fixed (well, except for the marina people, and we don't really count them), and they tend to keep to themselves.

mikorp has done a lot to try to bridge the gaps though, through putting on races, art shows, and whatever.

i ride fixed in oakland and am definitelly not wanting to add to the fractured, clickish, and elitist qualities of the scene..

who wants to start a new eclectic scene? we can join our groups (that means east bay and sf, too!) and share our obcessions!

i know i have seen you all around.. as we ride by in opposite directions, both of our eyes checking out what the other person is rockin'.. i can't believe we haven't been formally introduced yet!

Count me among the sceneless.

There's one guy that I know from the local roadie training rides, that just had one built up by a local shop that builds frames. Then there was that one other guy that I ran into at the coffee shop when I was running late and missed the start of the local group ride one Saturday morning last season, so I went back home and got my fixed-gear and rode with him instead. Saw him a while back and he's not been riding much and I think he sold his fixed-gear.

There's also another couple local roadie guys that were on the Jr. Olympic track team back in their junior racing days, but I've never seen 'em on a fixie. At least one of 'em still has the sprint though. If he's anywhere near the front for the sprint on training rides he's always a threat (unlike myself).

Other than that there's just me, that I know of, that rides fixed around here.

-Trevor

i have two friends who ride fixed, and we pretty much ride only for transport, if there is somewhere to go, bikes are always the choice.
even with only three of us, it is mad fun to do the one beer per bar thing for the evening. it's better than sitting on your ass all night!
i was being sarcastic about never seeing a fixed in philly, but you're right there are a lot of single speeds. in philly it seems like when you see a bike it's either a fix or some alien looking mountain bike (and there's a lot of those). also, i see a tall bike outside of Last Drop lately.

as Sinfield mentioned, we have a ton of one gear riders here in Portland.
I work downtown, and I constantly see fixies or single speeds. portland is a huge bike town, so.

London's got a pretty solid group of fixed riders but it is predominantly made up of messengers (although salmon got his messenger wings for knowing a soho alley that I didn't, props). probably about 50 or so total and the community here is mad tight because everyone who rides goes to the same pub every friday so we all know (if not recognize) each other. And the Herne Hill velodrome is hopping compared to Kissena. When I was there last it was a super slow day with well over 50 people there.

yeah, among messengers i see mostly single speeds. a lot of which are mtb/atb. philly loves the uberbeater. someone told me once that if you ever get chased, you should feel fine throwing your bike over a fence to get away, if you don't it's too nice. of course he was/is a vocational law-breaker.

I'm not downtown as much as i used to be, but i really don't see that many fixes. and when i do, they are usually stock pistas. although i saw a sick gan well with lots of shiny **** on it parked on second street not to long ago, but encounters like that are rare.

I've seen maybe 8 fixies total on the Westside, which is surprising, since it is very bike friendly.
