Ok... I finally got somewhere with this thing...

What I wanted was a more reliable commuter... I figured that it would work much better and eliminate the pesky chain from flying off of the front sprocket if I converted it to a SS...

So I went to Walmart and picked up a chain tool and a few other things like a new seat, some new grips and a new chain...

. here are some pics...

AHA !! SS Conversion ... Trailer Park Style of course.

New GRIPS !!! No more Shifter thingie...

Ahh... Made in CHINA !! <<<< =)

Got a new seat.. much better than the stock spring-loaded seat !!

Left Overs ? ??

3 piece crank ... lol .. one of the pedals already cracked.. I'm gonna get some metal ones this weekend ... hopefully !

And this is where she rests... right next to my other " BIKE " .. lol !!

From looking at the drive-side, and non-drive-side dropout pictures, I don't think you're rear wheel is on straight. You might want to double check that.

Looks better than it sounded when you mentioned the project first. Now get some bike-savvy friend or friendly shop to remove the superfluous cogs and replace them with spacers and throw away that plastic abomintion from the rear. Then trade the forks for rigid ones, and you got a nice lil' machine. I quite like the shape of the frame and even those cheapo cranks (quite similar to mine, incidentally, except that on mine the arms are less flimsy)

Have you ever tried to take a huffy freewheel off, or take it apart? The things are usually held on with locktite, and before I knew this, I broke at least two bench vises trying to get them off. The bearings inside them are usually squarish and jagged and also full of metal dust. Dont open the freewheel--you may hurt yourself.

What the OP needs is a NEW BIKE, as soon as the BB craps out, the wheels go out of true, the cones disintegrate, and the shocks bottom out. This is a huffy dont forget.

What benefit would I see from swapping to rigid forks ?

I plan to use this as my daily commuter and the routes I have are basically 50/50 street/sidwalk... I don't know if it even matters that I like to jump curbs most of the time and do other silly things and i think the spongy soft forks help a little HOWEVER ... the bike does feel " spongy " all the time..

that sponginess robs power from your pedal stroke. You'll go fastier and work less without that pogo fork. Keep lots of air in those big fat tires, and hop all the curbs you want.

hey if your going to use this bike, you should overhaul everything, i doubt anything on it is smooth running, and while you overhaul it you can slap a bmx freewheel (5bucks) on the back. but seriously, ive always been able to find better (no offense) bikes at thrift store for 5 bucks, i swear!

Basically save some weight and eliminate a potential failure point from the bike. Very cheap suspension forks are hideously unreliable. Also, you will accelerate better when you're standing on the pedals, as the bike will tend to move forward, not up and down.
If you ride dirt roads & cobblestones, you may want to keep it on.

Just another update..

I picked up one of thos digital odometer things that shows the speed, and I also picked up some new pedals with the clipless laces on it...

And I also picked up one of those metal granny cages that sit on the back of the bike to either side... sheesh...

I need to stuff my heavy laptop and my book-bag in there + another bag with a change of clothes for work !!!!!!!

ouch... this thing gets lighter, then heavier every day !!! lol

I'll see if I can get some pics of it after everything is installed...

Maybe you should retro-fit with fully Campy. That would be unbelievable. But, this looks a lot better than I ever expected. What exactly do you mean by pedals with clipless laces... toe straps?
