Going to Mexico for a week. Playa del Carmen. Question is: Should I bring my fixed or should I rent a clunker down there?

Rent a clunker. they always lose luggage down there.
FYI You can rent a Campy Equipped pista at the velo in Mexico City for five bucks

PDC is nuts.
You will worry less renting a bike.

When I flew to havana through Cancun, they lost the bike in cancun. Luckily it was a ****ster.

I rented a decent Giant while I was in Oaxaca this summer for $5/day. I brought my shoes and pedals, and the shop let me borrow a wrench to spin the pedals on. Worked for me.

dude, rent a bike. have you read any hotel reviews? I'm going down there in January. you need to be carfeul, especially with your money and your life.

I think I decided on rental. Not gonna bother fitting out a beach cruiser with clipless though. :)
I'm staying at Riu Yucatan. I've heard very good things about it. I've heard both that it is dangerous and also that there is nothing to worry about. Supposedly if you stick to the resort areas you're OK. I heard there's a rental place across the street from the hotel. Bringing my bag, a camera and some granola bars. They have the beer there already. Expect some photos on my return...I leave Friday. TIP, if you're interested I can let you in on whatever I may learn down there as far as biking and such.
Or if you already know, perhaps you could give me some pointers as far as being careful with money and life. Not so much worried about money, money comes and goes. Don't want to lose my life though.

RENT, be carful in mexico dude, really careful :( but if you really wanted a fixie you could pick up a cheap road bike at a thrift store, overhaul it, and rotafixa a cog on there

don't use your credit card anywhere shady, many times the shops will sell them and you'll have to go through all the invalid purchase stuff

For the love of all that is holy and sacred, that would be you and your bike.... RENT something when you get there.

Edit: the less "bling" you have on you, the less noticeable you'll be to the scammers and such.

I voted for flying it down but I changed my mind. You could prolly rent or even buy a good bike there. I mean I dont really know how big the scene is there but I dont think you will have any hipsters there to compete with.

I go to mexico like once a month haha. Benifits of living near border. Me and my friends just go down there to have a fun time on the cheap... just remember... mexico city looks fun from far away, but only from far away...

Interesting. Does there exist the possibility that I can find a nice track bike for cheap...hmmm...this merits thought. I'm thinking probably not since it is so far away from a velo. But you never know. It would be nice to pick up a pretty italian track for say $50 since it's all old and stuff.
I figure I'll be OK on the rented BC and a shot or two of tequila. I'll ride around with a bag full o' beer and wearing a sombrero on a beach cruiser. Style! Ditch the white belt for a bandolier (sp?)

I've been to many so called hostile places in Mex and never had any major problem. I've always travelled in numbers though.fwiw don't just stay in the tourist places or else you will never have actually gone to Mexico if you know what I mean. Knowing a little spanish cant hurt. I usually go down for Xmas and New years. They know how to party on new years like it's 1999 all over again it's a blast! Mexico (the city) is insane. I wouldnt survive a bike ride around the block there.

I lived in PDC for 2 1/2 years. I am unsure that there is such animal as bike rental in PDC, since it is too freaking small of an area to justify a bike. There is no possible way to go anywhere interesting on a bike (Tulum, Chichen Itza, Coba, and Cancun are way too far away under vertical tropical sun) and in all probabilities you will get mugged if you are riding your bike on HWY 307. The roads to other visit points are way too remote and roads are way too dangerous even on a rental car.

Lay down the bike, drink, eat, snorkel, and bum around. No need for cycling.

If you feel vigorous enough, you may pay a ciclocab boy to pedal HIM around. You will make his day.

He is not going to Mexico, he is going to the PDC: a place infested Euros and Americans.

Yucatan is an enchanting place, but PDC and Cancun are not authentic Mexican towns; just a concoction of some investors that saw the oportunity of opening resorts.

Enjoy your stay in PDC ... and get out of the resort one of those nights. From the Riu to downtown PDC is like a mile only. Pretty safe as far as I know.
